Here's an occurrence that has happened to me 3 times now;

On the first occasion i was driving along the M11, there was a loud pop followed by a sudden loss of power from the engine. Called mayday and they sent out a recovery truck and found that the pipe connecting the turbo had detached hence the loss of power. Fiat in their infinate wisdom fit special hoseclips and the breakdown guy didn't have the tool to retighten it so put a standard 2 1/2in hoseclip on instead. Since then i have always carried a spare hoseclip. It has happened on 2 more occasions, once in Greece and once in France. On these instances i easily fixed the problem myself. Had the Fiat clip been fitted i would have had to call the breakdown services, a potentially awkward situation when abroad.

The reason i mention this is that there has been a mention of this happening to other owners in the july edition of PMH, I thought my problem was a one off but obviously this ain't the case.

The offending pipe is located to the right of the rocker cover (the lower of the 2 hoses). My van is a Fiat 2.8idTD, not sure if it affects other turbo diesel variants but worth carrying a clip just the same.

Happy travels,

pete.

I hada similar problem on my old starfire (1.9td peugeot), same symptoms; RAC man eventually discovered pipe had come adrift, but this was right at the back underneath the engine - a pig to get to, but was sorted within an hour. Visions of an expensive turbo / head gasket job disappeared with relief!

Hi Pete

This is an odd thing to happen. Do you know if this was a hose clamp failure?
Perhaps it was caused by a sticky pressure control valve.
I'm not a turbo expert but I know there is an exhaust gas dump valve which controls the amount of turbo pressure, they can stick closed causing overboosting ..Just a thought..

Jim,

The hoseclip didn't fail, it probably wasn't tight enough. I've looked at the housing where the hose goes over and i reckon there should be a lip there which would give the hose and the hoseclip something to grip to. The only solution to the problem at the moment is to make sure the hoseclip is REALLY tight, which is probably why it occurred again, i didn't tighten the hoseclip suffiently on the subsequent breakdowns. Maybe Fiat have modified later housings. I,ve now tightened the clip with a screwdriver and molegrips for extra leverage and the problem hasn't recurred......yet. Just thought it would be a good idea if owners carried a hoseclip incase it happens to them.

Peejay

I’m using the same engine as you on a Kontiki, I have just been outside to look at mine and all my clips appear to be of the Jubilee type, my question is does the Fiat clip look like a Jubilee type or are they only used on imports?.

Thanks for the tip, spare Jubilees on the shopping list tomorrow.

Jim,

Checked with the dealer yesterday and its due to arrive at the end of this week, Don Amot (the dealer) then reckon a further 2 weeks for the registration etc to come through and also for them to fit a few extra's i've requested (seems a long time i know). In a bit of a pickle really now because were booked for the ferry on 25 June so not sure whether to take the current van or whether there'll be enough time to get the new prepped, probably take old faithful and save the mileage on the new one.

Ken,

The Fiat clip is similar to a standard hoseclip except for the part where you tighten it which probably needs some kind of small allen key but the recovery man reckoned a hoseclip was better, so that whats on there now.

Happy travels,

pete.

Although it’s the Peugeot engine, its all going to be similar.

Ordinary ‘jubilee’ clamps are pretty useless for large diameter hoses with a bit of pressure in them. The best ones I found ore these [img:1a640fbe48]http://www.arco.co.uk/arco/images/product/4229025.jpg[ /img:1a640fbe48] These you tighten with a 10mm socket/ring spanner where you can get then really tight. The band is about 25mm wide. They are the business in these situations. Their trade name is Jubilee® Super Clamps. Described as heavy duty, robust nut and bolt clamp in zinc plated / yellow passivated mild steel. Thanks for that Steve,

Here's the clip thats still fitted to the top pipe, can't figure out what tool you'd have to use to tighten it.

Peejay

None of the clips on my vehicle are of the pattern you have shown, I should have imagine mine are original as well, I wonder if they have come from two different production plants.
