Well we finally put our money where we really shouldnt have and bought a motorhome. We went all the way to Germany and got ourselves a 2005 second hand Chausson Welcome 17.
It was the best holiday we have been on together by far....3 days in Berlin then a major 1700km road trip back to Dublin. The only disappointment of the whole trip was the absolute rip-off prices we were charged for the sea crossings.
We got the motorhome from a dealer in a little place just outside Potsdam and I couldnt praise them enough. Check them out at
www.nuthetal-caravan.de we initially found the camper on the www.mobile.de website which is a real eye opener and really lets us in Ireland see just how much we are being ripped off with the prices of all vehicles.(I could have bought a brand new Porche Boxster for the same price as the motorhome over there-over here I might have got a new Mondeo for the same money)
Anyway the dealer handled all the documentation and export plates etc...we just went along and signed papers. They even put on an awning at no extra cost and threw in a few freebies from their shop. We had 2 nights of "wild"camping(ok we overnighted in carparks cause we couldnt find the "stellplatze's"-got them programmed into the sat nav now though thanks to the great download section on this website) but once we got off the eurotunnel at Folkstone last thursday night with the lashing rain and the dreaded light on on the Thetford toilet we knew we needed to find a proper overnight stop. We stopped at the junction 8 services on the M20 only to find there was a top notch campsite less than a mile away...result!! Many thanks to all the Pine Lodge touring park who took in a couple of newbies and provided a cable to save our batteries.
Waking up in the morning and having a proper shower was bliss...until the horrible job of emptying the cassette loomed....It was then that I realised that there may have not been any chemical in the toilet(lets just say it wasnt as broken down as it might have been).as I remarked to a fellow camper whilst waiting in the "emptying" queue"they dont show pictures of this in the glossy caravanning magazines!!"....and they should...I think I made a right pigs ear of it to be honest and a little pictoral guide would have saved me a few blushes.
Anyway...enough of the toilet humour...so after a fry up back at the services it was time to go hell for leather and try to make Holyhead intime for the tea time ferry....heres a tip for you...take the A55 all the way...dont bother with the A5 unless you have all day to navigate around it....its too narrow and windy..and more than once I had the wife up on one cheek hands over the eyes as she thought I was going to hit a passing lorry(I was fine though-LHD you see).
We arrived at Holyhead at 5 past 5 to be told that they were boarding and to go straight on(after paying a whopping fee of course).
We arrived at Dublin at 7.30 that night and the camper is now sitting pride of place in the driveway waiting to be registered.
Next summers destination has already been agreed on.....yep we are heading back to Germany...we loved our time there so much so next time we are heading down Munich way...if anyone has recommendations for around that area I would gladly accept them.
Well thats it for now.

Hi Mary + Stewart
Pleased you had such a great time, I enjoyed the read, brings back some memories of when we started…
I like your reference to the glossy ad’s about the toilet emptying
The dealer sounds great, wish some here would be obliging giving away goodies, but then like you we are being ripped off big time when it comes to anything concerning vehicles.
I should imagine you’re wife was a little concerned when travel in North Wales with some roads being narrow but I’m sure after all that she will relax and get used to being close to the traffic when here.
Pleased you’re both very happy and hope you have many safe and trouble free adventures.
MHS…Rob

Hi Mary/Stewart, Pusser would be willing to give you training on all aspects of the toilet, it is his speciality and he has more experience than any one else on here.

Good to see more from Ireland joining. We are in our 1st year of motorhoming and set out on our maiden trip last summer to Europe for 6 weeks. We visited 10 countries and put up 4,000 miles so we are "run in" now. Weren't that impressed with Germany but were really dashing through it. Will go back for a better look. It was a maiden trip in many ways as we had not even overnighted in the Swift at all until our 1st night in Appleby-in-Westmoreland, NW England. We stayed at a great site, the Wild Rose Park. We too went abroad for our motorhome, to London in fact. Much better value than here. Anyway, enjoy the trips and maybe we will have an Irish rally for MHF before long.
Hi Irishhomer,
we will be in your neck of the woods over the weekend, anywhere you would recommend to stay on Sunday? Friday and Sunday are taken care of
thanks
Noel

We are not blessed with camp sites in Donegal. See the attached link www.camping-ireland.ie/donegal/donegal.html for some info. My personal favourites are Narin, Portnoo near Glenties. There are 2 campsites within 50 metres of the beach. Gillespie's is one, as far as I know, also beside the Golf Club is Boyle's site, electric hook up available. Facilities a bit basic. Both take tourers. Also, further on around the coast is Tramore Camping & Caravan Site, near Rosbeg. Beside a lovely beach, roads are a bit windy though. Believe it or not, we have not camped anywhere in Donegal with the motorhome. Would also recommend Rossnowlagh or Murvagh Beach, you could wild camp at Murvagh. Murvagh is after the Rossnowlagh turn-off, closer to Donegal Town, look out for the sign on your left hand side. I will PM you with my number in case you are stuck.
