OK latest update - have finally narrowed down our options and a delay in the sale of a property having fallen through has given me more time to ponder.
Importing looks to be the best bet - savings are quite staggering, but I do have some questions for anyone that has recently imported from Germany.
a. As I understand it pre-owned vehicles are not liable for import duty is this correct. What is the levy on importing new vehicles.
b. If I know someone in the forces in Germany can I register it through him. (dont know if anyone can up with the answer to this one but thought I would throw it in anyway).
c. Has anyone ever used the services of agents in Germany that help with the purchase - ie arrange viewings/meet you at the airport/arrange registration documents/book accomodation etc. Have seen advertisment for an agent - wondering if this is worthwhile or a waste of money that could be put to better use.
d. Are there any Ahorn/Gigant owners out here let me know I have the odd question or two to ask.

i believe the rules are as follows:- any pre-owned vehicle with >6000 miles mileage or >6 months old doesnt incur VAT.

I too looked into this, but decided my money could be better spent flying me out , its not hard to do yourself and adds to the excitement
Take a look at my guide in the downloads section, and i believe Stormy is also adding a guide soon
Many thanks for your reply - have downloaded and read your guide - have already looked at mobile.de and been in contact with one or two people but did not get a positive feel after the initial contact. That is not to say I wont try again. However, there are one or two German dealers who advertise in the MMM and I have checked out their sites and they do have some good bargains so I feel it might be a better for my own peace of mind and also give me more options.
As they also advertise in UK they are obviously geared up (says me ever hopeful) for the peculiarities of the Brit buying abroad.
As I am looking at fulltiming next year - working possibly on campsites in the summer to finance the winter in Europe I am looking at Italian/German built vehicles (UK Friday afternoon build quality and some negative feedback does not inspire confidence in build quality on British built M/Homes for fulltime use).
Thanks again for your feedback it was much appreciated.
