Hi, all...

I intend to cut all connections with fixed living. I have a mad project which I won't go into here, but when it's finished, I intend to live in it full time.

Is there any documentation, or a concise booklet, or somesuch, regarding the legalities of doing so?

For instance, what about my driving licence and insurance? When I tell the insurance company that my address IS the MH, what happens?

Also, what if I ever get stopped by the police? When they say, "Is this your vehicle?" the answer is 'Yes'. When they say, "Where do you live?", I'll be pointing at the MH and saying, "In there!" What happens then???

Any pointers?

Giulio

Hi Giulio - welcome to MHF.
I am sure you will find lots pointers here if you search for threads on Fulltiming, insurance and postal address etc. etc. I'm not sure whether you will find anything you will like to read - however if you do, please bump them up because similar issues are worrying me at the moment and I would love to have some encouragement.

Thanks for bringing the subject up.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the pointers. Never heard of the phrase 'fulltiming' before, so now I shall google away!

Maybe I won't like what I find, but for me, freedom of movement is a fundamental right, and I cannot believe there are any statutory provisions preventing one from living on the move.

I'm already playing out potential scenarios in my head, e.g. "You can't sleep here, sir" (when legally parked) - reply being, "Sorry, officer, but I don't intend to drive while tired, as per your normal advice..."

Not that I'm looking for confrontation. Quite the opposite. Just trying to envisage what might happen to me as I eschew the 'normal' life...

Giulio - Yes you should find quite a bit on Google but what I really meant in my post is that there are quite a few posts on this site to check out.

From what I have seen you won't find any "statutory provisions preventing one from living on the move" - problems mainly arise from unbelievable practical difficulties like not being able to get anyone to insure a motor vehicle if you do not have a postal code address.

Comfort Insurance will insure FullTimers.

Costs an arm and a leg but they use one of their own postcodes in the box on the form that says - where is the vehicle kept overnight.

They do however ask that you have a postal address so they can send you the documents - and a contact number. Perhaps you could use a relatives address or a PO Box?

Thanks for that Leigh - I've bookmarked http://www.comfort-insurance.co.uk/ for future reference.
Looks like I will be loosing one arm and a leg when my divorce is sorted so I might be very limited in movement in future if I have to go for Comfort Insurance without a home address Wink Wink

There are hundreds of people living in motorhomes and caravans in this country - we call them gypsies! Tax and insurance, mot, etc., seem to be no problem once the police know it is your only address - you just get moved on, leaving all your rubbish and mess behind for the local community to clear up. It must be a wonderful life - good luck to you.

This is an outrageous and contemptible post, and I intend to have you banned from these forums for your self-evident bigotry.

Aside from revealing your inherent racism, your accusations are scandalous, and constitute a criminal offence.

I don't intend to dignify these remarks by commenting further. I shall report this matter to the relevant authorities, and you should seriously consider counselling.

To the other two of you that offered helpful comments, thanks!

It should have been apparent, even to the intellectually impaired, that my query was prompted in the first instance by my desire to comply with the law.

For the record, not only have I never, ever driven without tax, insurance and MOT, but I have never so much as dropped a sweet wrapper in the street.

I totally resent the remarks made by the bigot above, and the tarring of an entire group of people with the same brush, under the term 'gypsy' (which was used in a derogatory sense here).

Ironically, it re-affirms my decision to want to stay well away from people like this. Imagine having them as a neighbour and not knowing. Ye Gods!

Hi Giulio

You may claim, perhaps quite correctly, that the statement was bigoted but the facts are correct beyond doubt.

Many of the families who travel around the country in groups large and small, living in caravans (call them what you may) leave behind extraordinarily large amounts of rubbish and filth that cost the rest of us (the tax payers) huge sums of money. The local councils have to spend even more money building ditches and mound of earth around open green spaces to protect them from this type of desecration.

This is why full timers are looked upon with so much suspicion.
