We will get our first motorhome in March and would like some help and advice to kit it out. Rather than wait until then, can anyone tell us what we need to get started. We plan to use it in winter and also abroad, although not straight away! What gas/connectors do we buy? Hoses? cables? anything else....We will be going to the Excel show and plan to start buying stuff...................also thanks for all the info and laughs over the last few months while we have been just looking in
When I bought my first van, I decided to stock it up with all it's own gear, rather than having to rob the house of a pan or a can opener each time I go away.
To this end, make a list of everything you use in your kitchen throughout a day. Then buy the same for the van!
On top of that, the usual bedding, towels, food, a TV maybe, an oil filled or a convector heater, a torch, wine, cork screw, BBQ, deck chairs, maps, matches, washing line, pegs, dusters, motorhome shampoo, toilet fluids, loo roll.......
There is a list somewhere on the forum, I can't find it at present but will try again!

It sounds like you have already ordered a MH and will get it delivered in March - ? If so, there will be several accessories that might come with it eg hook up lead, possibly a gas bottle and so on. Best check that first.
There is a list somewhere on this site - I'll have a look. Be aware that shows are expensive places to buy from for "everyday " items. Most of us I suspect keep everything we need in the van so we can get on the road as fast as possible and without the hassle of packing and planning. That means two sets of things - for home and van - so look at local supermarkets, pound stores and so on before shows or accessory shops.
One of the first things you need is to join MHF, having done that ALL the info you will ever require will be here - many of the more 'experienced long standing motorhomers' will be along to offer you tons of help and advice to save you 're-inventing the wheel' but go for it, we did and haven't looked back !
Remember one nugget of gold info - "duplicate don't relegate" - if you use some item of equipment in the house - get one for the van [within reason], don't put up with a substitute otherwise you'll be cursing !

Hi
Totally agree. When sharing things between the house and van , the item you are looking for will, boyond any reasonable doubt, be in the other place!

Keep a box or bag somewhere. Everything you take out of the van for washing or servicing make sure you put it back there as soon as possible.
That way, all you have to do before you go away is remember the bag !
A check list of things to do before leaving the house is also useful on top of the bag.
Keep a diary of your travels. Surprising what cheering reading it makes on winter evenings when you can't get away. It's also useful for remembering sites to re-visit, routes your enjoyed and things you want to do next time.
Yes we have ordered a new motorhome...decided to jump in feet first...
as a woman whos priorities start with shopping!! I have been collecting since we ordered the MH and now it is spilling out from under the bed.. we could actually camp in the bedroom if there was room! when we collect it only comes leisure batteries, and a hook up lead, we need to get gas, hoses etc... this is my problem what do we buy so that we can dissapear into the sunset....or rather brighton beach front!
You'll want something to bring water from the tap to your tank, some fluid to stop your loo smelling and to make the flush water smell nice, levelling ramps to stop you having to sleep on a slope, possibly an awning to roll out from the side and stop you frying in summer ( ask -they might fit that free -better that they fit it ), bike racks to carry the bikes you will use instead of a car as you leave your van ( ditto above with awning).
A bucket or two for carrying water, washing clothes in, some means of hanging towels etc to dry so they don't scour all the dirt from the side of the van as they do so, maps and guide books, campsite guides and tons of MHF printouts of useful information, possibly a BBQ or means of cooking outside in very hot weather.... I'll think of all the other necessities.
One thing to remember is that all those little things that "don't weigh anything at all "do add up and you do have a weight limit which you must observe both for for your safety and because if you are found to be over that limit in a spot check then you might be in trouble.
G
The list goes on...comfy seats for outdoors, possibly something to put under the wheels in winter to stop you sinking in, possibly a TV/ DVD /Freeview box for long winter evenings, an aerial for TV ( one that works not a mushroom type), corkscrew.....
