How do you know what they are claiming for?
A former Essex nightmare neighbour drove into our brand new double gates (only put up to separate us from their anti social behavior). We had it on video. It was icy and the neighbour sat in the car and demanded to be taken to hospital. From her insurance she claimed for personal injury to her neck - I don't know about claims on her old car. She was on full benefits with 5 children. She told the police that her car went "wibbly wobbly" on the ice and therefore it was an accident. The police said that they could not dispute her claim due to lack of any evidence otherwise. We did eventually manage to get compensation for replacing the brand new gates by claiming on her insurance but you might imagine that does not compensate for all the aggravation she caused us.
Sorry for the long tale but the point is we only heard about her claims incidentally. So a scam could involve a lot more than the cost of a wing mirror - maybe a respray to fix the long scrape down the side of their 4x4 - who knows? Only the 4x4 driver. (Ohhh - please don't count me as being against all 4x4 drivers - Wink I may be one myself soon.)

Hi There!

The scam - if any, may be in trying to get you to settle in cash for any damage they claim was caused so as to protect your no claims bonus.

In addition to counter-claiming, if you are paying for a repair personally you have the right to demand a few estimates or even to nominate a repairer, provided the repair is up to an acceptable standard (that is, as good as directly before the incident - you don't have to improve their vehicle!).
After the repair you can also vet the invoice to ensure there is no overcharging and to check that only work agreed beforehand has been carried out (He that pays the piper calls the tune!!!).

Or a passenger takes a photo immediately after (or even before) the crash.

Well, maybe they have one (already smashed) mirror, crash it against 5 cars and then try to claim for it 5 times?

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Sadly scams are particularly aimed at honest people who wouldn't have thought of them Mad I suppose they wouldn't be scams if they were not Sad

In your case zaskar I would think a scam was unlikely but if it was it would involve a lot more than just the cost of a wing mirror (although having said that, I have heard of mirror replacements costing over £150 Mad )

In a way this is linked to Insurance comments I made on the firework thread. I think it is all wrong that a third party can claim on your insurance for this type of accident out of the blue and without any independent evidence whatsoever. After all it is you who are paying for the insurance Exclamation

If I ruled the world I would only allow Insurance companies to pay someone elses claim if I asked them to. - end of minirant Exclamation

Hi Max

remember your no claims discount is based exactly on that - no claims. Geo has a good point. I expect though you had a witness in your car who can vouch for you. Years ago I had an incident where a third party drove into the back of my car a petrol forecourt. My fully comprehensive insurance repaired my car but then knocked my ncb. The third party refused to fill in an accident form for years and so evetually it was all dropped as not worth pursuing and he got away with it.

Had the 4x4 driver not been on the mobile phone at time of impact and been concentrating on the road ahead, then this collision would have been avoided Wink .

It takes 2 to 2 tango.

If he was using a phone at the time then I could do with you as a witness.
