I have purchased a 1500 watt inverter for use in the motorhome. Can any one please explain as to how a 1500 watt inverter does not power my wifes 35 watt `hair straighteners`. You can probably tell i know naff all about electrics etc but i am baffled by this one. Thanks all

How is it connected to the MH battery, is the inline fuse blown?

When you switch it on does the fan run and the light turn green - if it has one.

Are the fuses on the inverter ok?

Is there any noise of operation?

Does it get hot?

When you apply a load is there a buzzer sound / red light or is it silent?

Have you checked the outlet is live with a tester?

What size is your MH battery and what voltage is it giving?

Thanks for your swift reply! Inverter seems fine on all other electrical items ( fan, tv etc ). The inverter fan works, and the green light comes on. when the straighteners are plugged into the mains they work fine but when the inverter is plugged into cigarette lighter they wont work. I have the standard 85 amp leisure battery fitted. Thanks

Is it a pure wave sine inverter or a modified sine wave inverter?

Does your hair straighteners have microprocessor technology in them.

I reckon the experts will be along soon Wink

My first guess is that the hair straighteners consume a lot more power than 35 watts, so that's the first thing to check.

If so, then it could be simply be voltage drop on the 12V cable taking it below the inverter threshold voltage.

If the hair straighteners are just 35 watts as you say, then apart from them not heating up, are there any other indicators on the inverter that "it is not working"?

Dave
