Wouldn't it be a good idea if we novices could go on a course arranged by "expert" motorhome people to explain winterising, reverse polarity, amps and such jargon, combined with practical demonstrations on the safety and technical features that are most important when owning motorhomes?

I would be happy to invest in the time and pay money on such a course,
esp. when one considers the risks and costs of doing things badly and in ignorance.

I feel so inept when it comes to anything that requires common sense - and this spoils the pleasure a bit of motorhoming.... Anyone out there who has the skill and confidence to run a 2 day course at an organised meet? In the North over a weekend?

Regards

Pat O'Connor

That sounds a very good idea Pat. I can't offer any input into it but I'd back that one !

This is something that would be great... but it would require a lot of organising and there would be health & safety and insurance issues to overcome. Imagine if someones motorhome got damaged or someone got injured! It would need a venue or proper training facility, that would probebly prove costly.

I don't know exactly where you are, but if you ever encounter me on a meet or rally I will gladly go for a drive with you and give you some tips. I am C1/D1, roadcraft and ihcd emergency driver trained with ten years experience of driving ambulances.

If it were to be done on an informal basis Snelly with no money changing hands - say at a weekend meet- would the same rules apply ? A group of friends meeting together and exchanging information on the subjects novices need to know ? There could be a disclaimer form covering damage with a clause stating that you understand that you follow all instructions at your own risk.

Both the C&C and the CC run courses. Have a look on their web sites or phone them for more detail.

peedee

ps both also issue numerous techincal sheets on all aspects of "caravaning"

Hi Shane

I feel very comfortable driving the thing, but when it comes to the mechanical bits that we now have take responsibility for, I am clueless... That's the bit that some of us probably struggle with.

For example the other day when I went to pick up my motorhome at the compound, the battery was flat. Having bought some jump leads (brand new - month ago) I thought I'd have a go. Guess what? I only managed to get the leads mixed up and blew the board on my wipers.

Then, I called out the emergency man, hid the startup leads - and he got me going -= I daren't tell him I'd done the job wrong.

All my life I've always had a company car and never had to check the oil, water and normal things most people do easily.

Regards

Pat

Pat

Oh right... I though you wanted driving and parking tuition!

Standard checks and stuff is easily done and im sure one of my MHF friends who own a garage would be more than happy to help!

G,

There's a lot of expertise on Facts, and I think you are right about keeping it very informal.

I would suggest driving instruction is best left out. That area is an absolute minefield.

I think people would be better off at a gathering where they can ask questions, have things explained to them and given a demonstration on how equipment works.

I know a few people who would be interested in finding out how the refillable gas bottle system work.

I myself would be interested in finding out about Sat Nav and having it explained to me.

Keep it simple and you can't go wrong.

Hi Pat
I am also new to this game and would welcome a low key meet with some of the more experienced guys. My particular interest is travelling abroad

I had this sort of thing in mind when I started the thread about a database of "tutorials". To have a practical demonstration would be even more valuable but there would be many people who could not attend.

If we could run to both - say informal "how to ...." rallies and a set of factsheets -it would be the best of both worlds.

Could there be a sticky or whatever somewhere for people to list the subjects they would like tuition in ?
