I have had problems with IE freezing and not responding now and again for a while now ...I just switched over to Firefox but I actually prefer IE! Last night it refused to load at all and is sitll unresponsive. I have/had IE6 ...should I UNinstall it and INstall IE7?? Anyone think this will work??
Bit scared to do it until I get advice!!
My son told me that I probably needed to re-install Windows, would this be right?? If so then I will be terrified to try that!! Knowing my computer "skills" I will end up offline completely!
Be grateful for any advice ...thank you! Ana x

Difficult to be sure without more info, but I had similar intermittant problems with IE6. I now have IE7 and have had no problems at all with it. So definitely worth a try.
Do you keep your system up to date with the updates from the MS site ? (This may happen automatically). If not I would advise you to do this. You do not say which version of Windows you have - I assume XP??? Is it Service Pack 2 - if not this is a highly recommended update.
Personally I would re-install windows only as a very last resort - especially if your system is up to date as you will have to apply all of the updates again, not a trivial task! And its probably not necessary.

Ana if you have XP and have not deleted any system restore points for some time see if you can restore to a date before you had the problem, start/help&support/undo changes to your computer with help and restore/restore to an earlier time its very simple and reversable, just depends how far back your restore points go, then once you are all sorted search on the web for acronis and buy the program, you will then have an excellent backup image of your system with an interface that is extremely easy to use, if you are coming to guardamar I will show you acronis on my laptop and you can then decide oops Gillian beat me to it

What O/S is it that you are suing and what service pack are you running?
Firstly Check for MS updates
Have you installed any new softwae since the problems started?
Have you run a recent virus scan? If so did it find anything or remove anything and put it to quarenteen?
Do you have Windows Defender installed?
have you noticed this happen with anything else?
What pluggings do you have in IE6?
what are you looking at when this happens i.e. are you opening a webbased PDF file or runnnig JAVA or looking at video etc etc? Is it just totaly random.
sorry for all the questions but you need to know some background before a solution can be found

Sorry ... just come back on here!! I will try to answer the questions that I can!! I run IE6 as I said, XP prof, service pack 2. I do virus checks on a rfegular basis but recently had spyware ... Smitfraud, Ave A Fast Click, Dbl Click etc ....I ran Spybot and found them.....SPYBOT now FREEZES too.... it finds the problems but will not fix......it does still work however as it blocks certain things......I also managed to update it ...but FIX - no!!
I installed AVG 7.5 and this found a load of problems (something I have NOT had in 3 years) ....but Spybot still finds them!!
I run ETrust antivirus which came highly recommended ... this comes out as "clean" after a scan....
If anyone need more info I will gladly give it if I can!!!
Shall I try to uninstall IE6 and install 7 or not??? I agree about Windows .. do not want to mess about with it!!
Thank you!!

Hi GypsyRose
I hope you get the problems sorted soon... IE7 will install over IE6 there is no need to try to remove IE6 before the upgrade, but the computer should be running free of any viruses or spyware before an upgrade to IE7 is started.
a couple of tips:
It is not a good idea to have more than one antivirus program installed on your computer at any one time.
Spyware programs often remove important system and program files ...in inexperienced hands these programs can be almost as dangerous as the adware/spyware they remove. Only ever run spyware programs that allow you to see what is being deleted or quarantined and then only if they keep a backup and allow these files to be restored in the case of trouble after a scan.
All now ok ... I DID find that IE7 did indeed install over IE6 ok .. but funny thing is that it seemed ok immediately BEFORE I did that so presume all will NOT be well long term...???
