Hi

If you buy from Dell, select your "package" but keep an extra up your sleeve. When they give you the price on the phone, play hard to get but mention the "other extra".

You will get it for nowt.

Make sure you buy by phone.

Russell

PS - you get a % cashback if you buy at www.quidco.com

Morning!

My laptop is a PC World £800. Toshiba.

For offering you words of wisdom, cycling and ship spotter forums, banking, playing dvds and listening to radio it has been a fine investment.

Should it ever fail (touch wood and whistle) i would certainly try a couple of the Colchester based independent companies. They have always been helpful with problems and accessories and always told me when replacement time comes to find a spec.and they will offer a quotation. In the event that the new machine had problems i know i could get immediate help. Worth thinking about if you are technically inept (or even inept technically) like me.

Nick

As Russell says - if you go Dell it is worth trying to buy an extra hard drive if its an interchangable type. Any extras you can think of should be a great deal less if bought on the first deal. Once you have bought it Dell will only want to sell you a new laptop or PC in future - in my experience they will not be interested in helping you get the most out of your present purchase.

I think you have probably seen enough advice about Laptops. However.
When I had a proper job and the company provided them the general idea was that Mac's were for graphics and MS for general use cause everyone was familiar with the OS. My first was as I recall about £2,500 an IBM. We then had new ones every 18 months my favourite was a CTX, Toshiba was a bit frail we had several screens break ( I should say falling of passenger seats). Currently I have a DELL Inspiron which is cheap and cheerfull ( purchased from a local dealer at less than direct??) but not as robust as my previous Advent.
Our Laptop is our GPS, TV, DVD, Photo Storage,Games machine etc etc. and it works very well.
If you have the money to spend I would go for a Sony.

Hi Nora,

I can say that the IBM Thinkpads are extremely well built and engineered but they come at a price.

I recently bought a laptop for home use on a budget and went to PC World and a few places. I was not keen on buying unknown brand names.

I ended up with a Compaq for €750. It has widescreen, 80GB and 1024RAM. I think it was about €20 more expensive that the Dell would have been online. Because you are travelling with it I would budget for extra service and support... it's likely to get moved about and banged about a bit more.

Competition is high so you are going to get the same deal from most manufacturers. I personally think that if you spend 700-850 you will get something decent that will last a good number of years.

The one think I did notice was that Packard Bell seemed to be overpriced.
