There have been threads on here suggesting that in most cases your fuel consumption suffers, This is because when for example you approach a hill you can see it and anticipate either slowing down or speeding up to stay in a high gear. The cruise control waits until you have started to slow on th ehill then pours fuel in to try and accelerate if the hill is already too steep for the gear and the weight you end up slowing down changing gear etc all of which costs more fuel than a modest anticipation.

When GPS mapping recognises gradient in the next generation perhaps you could have predictive cruise control to get over this.
