Hi, after many months of research, months of looking, one show (NEC Birmingham) and reading this site, we have narrowed our choice to 2 vans. They are quite different in layout; the first is a Hymer classic, 2006, 644U with 2.8 engine, full dinette, side kitchen and rear lounge; 2nd is Hobby 585 AKMC, full dinette and side seat, rear kitchen on 2.8 engine. Both layouts suit for different reasons. My questions are these;
Brownhills (who have been most helpful) Swindon have allowed us to reserve both for one week while we make up our minds. They have offered us the hymer for £35,495, 3k off the forecourt price. Is this a good deal for a 2006 model on the old fiat chassis?
The hobby is £37750 with no movement on price as Brownhills say this has been priced on a 2.3 engine by mistake and therefore they will honour the forecourt price but effectively this is discounted already - does this sound right?
Finally, they have quoted prices for awnings, bike racks and a 2nd gel battery, all of which I have found cheaper on the internet, even with fitting costs this seems steep e.g 4m awning £510 Brownhills price, £348.95 internet price for fiamma 4m awning - is their pricing reasonable??
Would be grateful for any answers please
Healpro
We bought a 2006 Classic 684 from Brownhills in Walsall in September.
The extras fitted free included:
4.5m awning - housing sprayed to match silver body
Gaslow system with 2 x 7kg bottles
Dometic 2100 AC unit
4 Bike Rack
Reversing camera (colour) - needs replacing already though as it leaks, fair to say they are getting us a new one
Ours was already discounted down in their end of season sale.
I would have thought they would throw in awning and bike at this time of year- Season of giving and all that!
They messed us around on the PDI and pick up date so the Gaslow sytem was negotiated in at that point. A good tactic as their after sales is not always as good as their sales!
Van is superb just what we wanted as a family of 5!
Hi, A good deal is always your own discission, while i am sure you can continue to look around and find items and MH's for less and for more, in the end it will be your decision if you are satisfied with the deal you have negotiated, and it sounds like you aren't really there just yet, so i wouldn't jump at anything until you are happy as it will be you that has to live with the decision.
But what ever you do I and I am sure a lot of people on this site wish you well
If you live in the Swindon area there are also West Country Motorhomes at Blunsden Abbey ( coming out of town on the Cirencester / Cheltenham road turn left at the lights at Vicarage Garage at the top of Blunsdon hill - just after the Motorola building)
We have had 2 problem-free MHs from them and good, honest sales and service.
Thank you for all of your replies;
Brian, you are right, whether or not it is a good deal is up to us but the feedback was valuable to us
Kands, I did not make it clear that both vehicles are brand new, the sites you kindly suplied were 2nd hand Hymers and am I right in thinking that Brownhills are the only NEW dealers for Hymer??
Glacier, how on earth did you get all that fitted free?? Must be well over 2K worth of kit there!!
Grizzly, thanks for the suggestion, actually we live in Southampton! And our hearts are set on a hymer or hobby...........
Andy and Amanda, I agree, their prices seem very high on extras, will try further negotiation
I have recently ordered a Hymer C644 with the rear lounge from Brownhills healpro, I have researched many vans before deciding on this one, it is one of the few vans with two dining areas and loads of storage space, the quality of the interior is also superb when compared to my present Elddis and other marques I have viewed. The washroom is one of the best I have seen.
I believe I have got a good deal from Brownhills in Newark being comparable to your figure, I am having a crank up satellite dish on the roof, TV aerial, alarm and awning fitted, these will be fitted without any extra labour charges, if I bought the extras online I would have to pay to have them fitted.
There are loads of vans on the market and each has its own pros and cons but obvioulsy the final choice is yours.
Don't forget when you come to sell it the old cab will be worth less, so what you save now will be passed on when you come to sell it. I am looking for a new M/H and have been offered some good deals on new cab models. The 07 Hymers are on Transits which in some peoples opinions are better than a Fiat (mine for one)
I am going to try and hold out for a new can model it is just a matter of leaving your details with dealers and let them do the offering. They will all tell you that they don't have to offer discounts on 07 models, but some have called me back offering better deals than there best offer.
Just don't let them rush you by giving you a week to make your mind up. At our local Brownhill they have a new 06, 544. which they offered me for 3k less than list 2 months ago. They still have it today and now I can have it for £3500 less than list.
They made me an offer. I then told them what I wanted in addition and left it with them to think about
Like RichardnGill say - they nearly always come back to you.
I find it helps to give them a list of extras at various prices, that way they can at least meet you somewhere in the middle, or pick the ones they have the best margin on.
I didn't get everything I asked for - they said no to Silver Screens, a SOG and an outside shower point!
I concentrated on the higher price items and those with big fitting charges - eg awning, A/C and Gaslow. Also the labour costs are marginal to them, so its a win-win.
The only other point is be very specific about what you specify - ie the exact model. Some dealers tend to try and fit lower spec equipment, I knew I need a 2100 not a 1500 A/C unit given the size of van
My motto has always been if you don't ask you don't get and be persistent - don't take No for an answer.
