Hi

I was wondering if it's worth the effort of trying to sell all my old crap on eBay in perparation for full-timing (no this isn't imminent, I just expect it to take a long time Wink

(I'm and eBay virgin so please be gentle with me)

I've had a look at the eBay stuff here. Very useful, but I'm still not sure.

I'm not talking here about things that obviously have value, but stuff like the hundreds of 'Motorcycle Sport' magazines I have in the loft. There used to be a fair market for these and there are some for sale on eBay, but no bids. Of course any potential buyers may be 'sniping', but
I really don't want to spend 15 minutes putting together an ad plus another 15 packaging and posting an item all to make a couple of quid, so here are my questions:

Is there any way of telling if an item sold and at what price after the sale has closed?

Do I pay anything if an item doesn't sell?

Can I easily resubmit an article which doesn't sell or do I go back to square 1?

Is there any way of speeding up the placing of ads for multiple, similar items?

Would I be better of just taking them to the dump?

Any other tips?

Chris

Yes, if you look at the item after it has sold you will be able to see the amount of the winning bid & the name of the winner.

Do I pay anything if an item doesn't sell?
Yes but it can be re-listed, I can't remember whether I had to pay any more but if so it was not very much.

Can I easily resubmit an article which doesn't sell or do I go back to square 1?
Yes its as simple as clicking the mouse. You can also change it a bit the second time, e.g. put a lower reserve on it.

Is there any way of speeding up the placing of ads for multiple, similar items?
I believe there is but have never done so.

Would I be better of just taking them to the dump?
My parents brought me up never to throw anything away if it could be useful to anyone else.

Any other tips?
Can't think of any! Rolling Eyes

Good luck! Cool

Hi. A BIG YES to ebay.

We started full timing in March 2004 and sold everything on ebay. You need to leave plenty of time to dispose of a whole house contents. It took us 3 months to get rid of everything. It is also great fun to see what prices things sell for (often for something you can't wait to get rid of and can't imagine anyone else wanting).

You can sell everything this way, including the furniture and maybe even the cat! YOu can make really good money on some of the things you sell too. So if you want some fun and to make some decent money on your things (including the 'junk') - sell them on ebay. You can even sell broken computer bits on ebay at a profit.

The postman will collect parcels over a certain weight (for a price which you can pass on to the buyer) and you may even end up knowing him quite well.

The alternative is to take the lot to auction, but we wouldn't reccomend it. We sold some things this way, but the prices are low and things get stolen (watch out for the 'no responsibility clause'). Some friends had their entire household sent to auction and got a pittance for the lot. The best things were stolen and the money from the items sold was wiped out by the things that didn't sell and had to be disposed of by the auction house.

It's much better to use a combination of Ebay and tip or skip.

Again, to answer your question Ebay - YES!

Hope this helps.

Hi All
Ebay gets a big thumbs up from us to date we have made nearly 4.5 K... yep you read it right 4500... just from stuff we had in the house... We aim to get this place on the market July of next year and once it is sold retire and full time.. but we still have 22 years worth of junk to sell

we have sold countless things on Ebay old pc's, a printer that didnt even work... i clearly stated that in the auction and still got 20 quid for something i was going to skip.... Magazines do sell but sometimes you have to be persistent , my wife sold a series of magazines for £75 and the buyer even picked them up... the best one she had was a coat which cost her £30 4 years ago.... it went for £55, before ebay that is something that would have gone in the charity shop bag. We will be getting more stuff on in the new year as things are selling a bit slowly at the.. but we definately try to ebay it before skipping it... My most recent sale is a collection of magazines to a guy in Germany he has sorted a friend to pick them up whilst he is here and take them back... To really speed up your listing it is worth getting selling manger pro (all explained on the ebay site) costs about 6quid a month but it is worth it for the work it saves... once you get into the swing of it you can list an item in 5 mins....

Easy money for junk......

give it a try but be persistent...... sometimes you need to re-list 2 or 3 times to get the right buyer.. but it is worth the effort... well it has work for us at least and has made a sustansial difference to the "going away fund"

take care ......Keith N Debs......

Hi Chris,

Is there any way of telling if an item sold and at what price after the sale has closed?
ANS
By this you mean, a similar item, if you join ebay, simply find an item the same as yours and click watch this item, when finished you will have the end price to see.

Do I pay anything if an item doesn't sell?
ANS
Generally small items you pay, 15/20/25p to list, if not sold no other charge.

Can I easily resubmit an article, which doesn’t sell, or do I go back to square 1?
ANS
Very easy, just click one button and it’s relisted.

Is there any way of speeding up the placing of ads for multiple, similar items?
ANS
Yes, I have not done this myself, but there is a facility to list multiple items.

Would I be better of just taking them to the dump?
ANS
Certainly not, you can sell anything, including mag’s, it will all go.

Any other tips?
ANS
Be very honest in your description, be ready to answer any questions, make sure you pack items well, watch out, when selling large expensive items that the payment is okay, use paypal where you can, or, personal cheque (wait at least 5 days to clear).

If you go into this with conviction and enthusiasm, there is no reason you could not sell all your household items at a reasonable price.

I think I remember, Dave(Nukeadmin) sold most of his items this way, including items from the garden shed.

Good luck.

MHS….Rob

Hi Chris

Never mentioned PayPal as it slipped my mind but i noticed MHS had mentioned it in his post.

I am not decrying paypal in any way and i would reccomend you set a paypal account up but before you do read this site and follow the advice on it... it is better than ending up like some of the folks on there http://www.paypalsucks.com

I have seperate bank account for paypal payments if someone pays by paypal i transfer it as quickly as i can to an account paypal have no access to. read the site and this will soon make sense to you. dont let it put you of.. once you get going ebaying is very addictive.

for multiple listing the ebay turbo lister is a small download which is free to use ... all your listing is done offline then you just upload it all in one joblot...

Take care Keith N Debs..
