I'm about to treat myself to a Fiamma Carry Bike Pro C for my Talbot Pilote, I've done the search forums bit and am fairly comfortable about fitting it myself.
One thing I'm a bit unclear on is the type of bolt/screws that is used to secure it. If these go right through the panel is there a plate that I fix on to provide extra strength or do you use just a washer and nut
This question has arose as a previous owner of the van clearly had a bike rack fitted at some point. I can see where the holes were filled when it was removed both inside and out
Any tips from previous experience in fitting these would be greatly appreciated
Hi
Our Fiamma had the bolts go straight thru the panel with a plate fixed on the inside, then a plastic cover clipped on the plate to hide it, and the nuts. The bolts were coach bolts and when everything was nice and secure the bolts were cut off just after they passed thru the nuts and the cover fitted.
Dont forget to apply some silicone to both sides of the outside bracket pads before fixing. (It keeps it all watertight).

Fitted my Fiamma bike rack, came with small steel plate for inside. The only problem with the supplied coach bolts they were too short,so just bought longer ones 5" from ironmongers.
Also used stud finder before drilling ,but you say there are holes there already. Anyway its so easy to do yourself.

You can get all the fixings you need from the big B&Q warehouses. They do large square plates (as well as normal washers) which will spread the load better.

In addition to the suggestions made by others I would suggest you use your judgement regarding plate size. Usually the van is reinforced where the rack is attached if not larger plates will help. Also coach bolts tend to be of low tensile strength (5.6)(fiamma may be special) and are thus not very strong perhaps replace these with Torx or Cap Head (8.8 or 10.9) . Use Silicone to seal and Locknuts with thread lock.
DO NOT Overtighten or your gel coat & glass fibre will crush and craze.
Have a good one
