From an article in today's Mail it appears 3 mobile are to reduce the cost of using their phones abroad.
Calls to Britain from Ireland, Italy, Australia, Hong Kong, Sweden and Denmark will only pay UK rates without any roaming charges added.

If only...! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could use free UK minutes as well ?
I feel a plea to Vodaphone coming on...!

I have a UK Vodafone on the passport tariff. To connect, the call costs 63p plus VAT. Once connected, I chat for as long as I like for the 63p, subject to.....
1) Being on Vodafone UK's preferred partners network. In Italy, this is Vodafone IT.
2) I am using minutes from my UK bundle.
My UK calling plan costs £24 per month and includes 500 mins of chatter.
If I exceed 500 mins per month, international call is 63p to connect, plus the standard UK tariff.
My Italian SIM charges 20 cents per minute to phone England and 10 cents per min for any call in Italy - mobile or landline (excludes the equivalent of 0845, 0970 etc)

Interesting Russell. I'm with Vodaphone as well and signed up to Passport as a way of ensuring I paid a flat rate to send and receive calls, on top of the call charge. I was told I could not use UK "savings" schemes - ie the Talk for 60 minutes plan and was not told there was any way I could save money.
How exactly do you get on to Vodaphone's Italian preferred partner ? Does that mean you select your network on your mobile when you make the call ?

I'm on Vodaphone too - and use Passport. Vodaphone post a list of their "preferred partner networks" on their website.
When you're abroad, if your 'phone is set to "select network automatically" it may just not pick-up on one of the preferred partner networks. Best thing to do is to set "select network manually" when you arrive in the Country and then you can forget about it - until you change countries !

The 500 minutes are included in my UK bundle and simply get deducted. IT is a pay monthly contract.

and a 40 minute call to the UK cost just 63p.
Interestingly, calls are 75p per minute in Switzerland as no VAT is applied.
Shortly after arriving in a country, you will receive a text advising you of the "preferred partner".

Any advise on travelling in Africa for 6 months anyone?
My son is going on an escorted overland trek and will not be able to e- mail for 42 days to start with. As its 6 months I would like to have some form of emergency contact.
He says he cant afford a phone but I still need to contact my boy now and then. (He is a man at 21 but he's still mams boy to me)
We will also be in Spain for 5 weeks so I am really gettng concerned about cost of calls
