I would like to do both at sometime, but i suppose the quickest to start with so we can have a good ole look at them frogs legs hoh hoh hoh(french accent) Wink

I would say in tems of cost and time and flexibilty then the tunnel is for me

as far as the time goes tunnel.....we always go by ferry as its a 3-4 hour drive on a good day from home to dover so the ferry gives us a chance to wander round get some fresh air and have a break.....i have always found the tunnel more expensive but then you pay to get there quicker i suppose

I prefer the Ferry. After a five/six hour journey from the North, the Ferry is a break, a pot of tea and a meal etc etc

The tunnel is a plus for speed and obvsiously for dog owners, you can stay in the van with the dog.

If I could take Oscar on to the passenger decks, The Ferry would always be the winner.

On the other hand there is always www.superfast.com with it's doggy cabins!

Living in the South-West of the country there is the problem of which to select; pay £400 to cross from Plymouth to Roscoff or spend the extra time driving across to Dover or Ashford to use the quicker and cheaper crossings.
When we decided to go to the Loire valley the choice was £400 and 250 miles or under £100 and 600 miles, remembering the distance had be travelled again on the return trip. With only one driver, better half having mobility problems, I wish that the choice was between ferry or tunnel Shocked

Hard to compare Raine.

If you are going for speed then the tunnel
If you are going for price then it has to be the ferry.

You can get a good bargain on either but have to look around more or go in the middle of the night for the tunnel to be cheaper.

Both are comfortable and deliver you straight to the autoroute in France. If you are coming off the M20 then the tunnel is easier to get to. It's a bit of a trek to Dover docks when the roads are busy.

You can turn up earlier than your booking for the ferry and either wait on the dockside or you'll more likely be put on the next sailing. You are not allowed to arrive more than 2 hours before your booked time for the tunnel. Not always easy to do if you are coming from a distance.

The art is plaaning your journey. We used to travel from plymouth to roscoff but found that with planning the Dover Calais route saved us quite a lot of money. the journey to Brittanny was a little tiring on the way there but the jouney back was nafff. It took 12 hours because we thought we could do it in a day. Well half of france had the same idea.

This year we have planned 2-3 days jouney with multi stays along the coast and the rest drinking wine and resting in the sun. the jouney back will be the same but with a two day stay in Le Touquet plus a day in this country to travel home. We are new comers to travelling through france but we learn each year by using Motorhome facts and the people we meet along the way..
