We are going to France in a few weeks time and wonder about using a mobile phone abroard.

1. when calling home do I have to use the international code??
2. when calling to a mobile from the UK do you have to use the internatinal code??

Hiya Mike, Before you go to France, call your service provider..they will need 24hrs notice to switch your phone settings to 'international roaming'.
To make a call home from your mobile, dial the following: 0044 then the std minus the first '0'.
Sample: to call Harrogate the STD is 01423 followed by number
so I would dial from my mobile 00 44 1423 (number)
When calling a mobile phone from the U.K to France, just dial the number the same way you would here Wink

Oh BTW there is no charge for the switch to international roaming, just be aware of the call charges, my last visit abroad I found text messages more expensive than calls,...again check with your provider....Regards Dave

Or............ go to a post office, (in France anyway), and get an incredibly inexpensive phone card. You have to dial godzillions of extra digits as well as the 00 44, but the post office-bought cards last for ages.

Buy a card in a bar tabac or similar and they don't last long at all.

or go to a phone shop and buy a french sim card if you are away for a long time, that way you get the convenience of using the mobile phone at a much lower rate that your UK sim card. Need to make sure your mobile is unlocked so that it can take foreign sim card though,

Unlocking is basically a software process whereby the phone is activated to be able to work on any network i.e. Orange/Vodafone/TMobile etc. I think you can just phone up your provider and ask them to do it over the phone for a small fee (<£35 ?)

If you take your phone to use abroad do advise people not to phone you unless it is urgent. There is a charge to you for the service!

Hi Moncayomike, have a good time in France. If you have all your numbers stored on your phone for quick dial, don't forget you'll need to edit them to the international dialling code. Always worth doing the important ones just in case of emergency.

Just to add to what Chris said, if you store [u:7b90567110]all[/u:7b90567110] the numbers on your 'phone beginning with '+44' instead of the first '0', you can then dial any of them from anywhere in the world, and they still dial properly at home here.

E.g. If the number here is 020.7123.4567, store it in your 'phone as +4420.7123.4567. It'll still dial correctly here in the UK. Smile

And what can be handy as well, store the important numbers in the phone not in the sim-card. when you change the card you don't need to reprogram all your numbers.
