I think it is a good idea, and a caravan also a great idea if you are fairly static, also cheaper with respect to running costs! Note... if you happened to pass your test after 1997, the towing weight is restricted and legally you wouldnt be able to tow almost any caravan.
£12000 would buy you a good van from abroad if you wished to import.
It could also buy you my winterised Burstner T610 motorhome, which is capable of going to high altitudes and using as a ski van. You would also have a thousand £ to spare to spend on whatever you wished. I spent 6 months in this van with a friend and it was a really great layout and very comfortable to live in.
It is for sale soon with 12month MOT and 6month Tax. I am selling because I want to try a homebuild conversion that better suits my needs.
Van has: blown air heating in living area and toilet, black out blinds/fly screens all round, 2xdouble beds or 2xdining areas, hot/cold water, shower, outside shower point and additional hose, toilet, 100ltr fresh water inside, 100ltr outside waste water tank, 3 way fridge+freezer, stable door with additional deadlocks fitted, silver screens, bike rack, 3 batteries, 2x15KG external gas bottle storage, 2xbike rack, roof rack, chequer plated roof, solar panel, 3 gas burner, cavernous storage, outside lockers, Fiamma Awning, ALKO galvanised chassis (very stable and never rust), 2.5TD engine, power steering, 16" wheels, mains hookup and lots of sockets, satellite dish + larger spare for use abroad, 2 large safes, cd player, additional wiring for normal TV aerial, reversing camera, strip lights, spot lights, outside light, extractor fan, net curtains for privacy when parked up in towns, FSH. The van is very easy to drive, only 6.9metres but feels big inside and light. I'm looking for around £10 950 obo.

I am staying near TWells... but I had a hard job getting where I am now and it's not 100% certain I can stay here.
There are some CL sites around, that i may stay 28 days on when the season opens..
My reasons are : wanting my own place, sick of renting, freedom, just to be different.. try it out etc..also gives me a chance to 'thin' down all the things I just don't need at this point in my life.. If I dont like it, I can always sell it and go back to bricks..
I brought a £6000 Chevrolet, 24 Foot so a good compromise I think length wise. Has all the usual MH things.. ok its 1985 but sold with MOT and a generally reliable if old V8 engine..
I am a home mechanic so happy to take a risk on the age of vehicle.
Mine runs on LPG.. so it wouldn't break the bank taking it away now and again, either locally <200 miles or a European trip in summer.
I need to use it to warrant its ownership..
It has A/C for summer, Central heating for winter, good Fridge Freezer, shower, 2 double beds etc etc... very comfy for 1-2 People FT.
The walls on a lot of these American RV's are insulated.. mine is, but strangely,it's not double glazed..
It may be odd to go from a town center to life relatively on my own, but I am often out in the evenings so am not bothered about this...
being away from the average town center is no bad thing these days, and I am only 32!
let us know what you decide.. and if you want to pop over for a beer and see the van please do..!
John
