Just back from various places in the Highlands etc ( Inverness, Loch Ness, Fort William, Glen Coe, Loch Lomond and Arrochar to name but a few. We tested out the old Avon remedy and are pleased to report that for the following test subjects: Carol Gavin Craig(14) and Christopher(10) skin so soft( SSS) was a winner. One point to bear in mind is to purchase the OIL based one and not the lotion as our extensive testing results show that the OIL spray is best. For those of you who may be holidaying in the aforementioned areas Inverness fishing shop has a stock of SSS as does Glen Nevis camping and caravanning site.
Have motorhome, will travel

As sss (the oil based one) is a bath oil (i have also got the spray) it would be good to have a bath (so youre covered all over), then put sun cream on top where needed, cos as you say ,you could burn. Tho we used to be oiled and vinegared when i was small, and don't remember being burnt, maybe its the ozone layer now, i certainly can feel it burning more. As my sis is an Avon rep (has been for years) i can ask her to check with head office (they are an international comp), and see what they sayif you like.

As author of the original post, thanks Carol and Gavin for the update on midges in Scotland. used the SSS oil on Nile cruise a few years ago and fairly successful, although did get a few bites, maybe midges in Scotland not so lethal.
After reading replies to the original post had visions of having lovely soft skin from the Skin So Soft and sitting in a haze of BBQ and cigarette smoke (thought of taking it up just to upset the midges) with a hint of citronella in the background. Of course would need to sit in wide open space away from trees, especially fir trees. Anyway,no-one would want to come near us due to the aroma of iron from taking the Vitamin B1 tablets. Seems that our experiences in Scotland would be somewhat limited.
Could otherwise invest in a bee mans overall or try the silverscreen romper suit made from wine bottle coolbags but surely we would get some strange looks, also need to fit a Splatometer. An alternative would be to drink so much Scottish malt whisky that we wouldn't know it even if we were bitten - seems a good idea but would be unable to travel.
[b:1cefd59737]Thanks everyone for your suggestions, will let you know how we get on. In the meantime if you meet people who smell funny or look strange, it's us[/b:1cefd59737]

Whilst on our travels we saw a few other interesting midge repellents. One of these was a sort of tent for your head made of fine netting, it looked lovely, in a sort of chocolate brown colour, funnily enough didn't see a single person with one on. There was also a full body one which looked a treat would have loved to see some one striding about the glens with one of those on, strangely for such a midge infested area I didn't see a single person with one on, not surprising maybe given that they are £22:95
