There was a report in a newspaper somewhere that before you installed Vista you had to give Windows permission to do a remote scan on your system and that they could do this scan whenever the whim took them.
Is this an urban myth and should anyone be concerned if it is true ?

My son has it on his PC and laptop at home in California (he works for MS!), and we saw it working in December; seems a nice display, but as for improving performance I don't know. Seems expensive in th UK; unless you get applications that need Vista I wouldn't bother - especially if your machine is more than 2 years old. All new PC's will have it in due course......

I second what Mike said. We've had it for a few weeks now , and it's very pretty. There's some nice window preview stuff (like Macs), and many other features that Mac have had for a while (can't think of them at the mo).
It's nicer to use than XP, and has some better debug / fault finding facilities on it, especially in the task manager (not that you'll ever need them, of course )
All in all, I wouldn't bother upgrading. Some hardware (especially the video graphics card) will need to be upgraded on a lot of computers, to handle the whizzy new stuff. They're saying the graphics card must have at least 128MB of RAM on it.
Basic memory will need to be increased too for most people - they're saying 512MB is the minimum, although they said that 256MB was the minimum for XP, and that ran like a slow old dog untill you put at least 512MB in. They recommend (I'd take it as a minimum) 1GB main memory. 2GB should be good.
The only performance improvements you're likely to see are as a result of the hardware upgrades, rather than the Vista OS itself.
If you really have too much time on your hands, you can wade through the Microsoft Technet Vista forums - VERY BUSY! Look

Basically, I'd look at it in PCWorld, and play with it, but keep your wallet in your pocket. You're likely to end up with more problems than you had before if you upgrade. Buying a new PC with Vista already loaded (don't buy one that says "Vista ready", 'cos you'll have to do the install yourself) should be OK. Don't know what the tech support is like at PC World yet.

Hi all, my home computer (desktop) is only 8 months old, runs windows xp home, media edition, I ran the Microsoft test to see if my machine was ready for the Vista upgrade, was somewhat disappointed with the results, would need to replace the graphics card, upgrade the memory and sound system, and what with the cost of the Vista upgrade I considered it too be far to expensive and really did`nt see what better it would be in the finish.
So I will stick with XP, it serves me well and has`nt caused me any hassles, may get round to Vista if I eventually upgrade the tower.

If you really want it Del have got it on there new PCs, and they are quiet cheep. I am sure it would work out cheeper to buy a new PC and sell the old one. My lap top is only a year old so I will not be bothering for another year or so. I still know some people with windows 98, it just depends what you want your PC to do.
I am sure it would work out cheeper to buy a new PC and sell the old one.
Hi Richard
I tend to agree and if you care to look

one of these would be a good buy .... Vista Premium Home upgrades are priced at around £150 then you may need extra memory so at £399 the Aldi offer looks a winner..... on sale from next Thursday
