Most of my PCs have been my son's hand-me-downs. His last PC running XP Pro has caused him a lot of bother recently suffering from an intermittant fault which may be hard disk or maybe motherboard. After weeks of frustrating problems he decided to buy and construct a new PC using all the latest technologies and Vista.

He took delivery of the bits last week and has now spent 3 evenings trying to get Vista running. He is having all sorts of problems usually involving lock-ups. After taking a BIOS motherboard update yesterday evening it does not even get as far as booting Vista.

Initially it did look as if Vista was installing correctly although it was taking over 3hours! There were no warnings to give any clues as to why his new 2G ram was not whizzing.

So a word of warning to anyone thinking of doing similar.

There was a report in a newspaper somewhere that before you installed Vista you had to give Windows permission to do a remote scan on your system and that they could do this scan whenever the whim took them.

Is this an urban myth and should anyone be concerned if it is true ?

How do we know they are not scanning our systems at the moment.
We have windows updates running automatically, so how would we know they do not have carte blanche to access our files whenever?????

Just installed Vista on a Laptop which I am hoping will be mine but the missus does not know I have bought it yet so I may be forced to sell it. It was preloaded but not installed if that makes sense. First impressions is that it is much slower than XP as XP was slower than 98SE (Millenium was a joke so not bothering to mention) and 98SE slower than 98 and 98 slower than 95 and 95 slower than Dos. So we can safely say that after nearly 30 years we now have a slower operating system than when we started.

Of course the reason it is slow is because there is more in it but I wonder really how much of that is in it is really necessary.

It took at least twice as long to install as XP and when it finally appeared it is very much the same except they have stuck things in different places, given it a new look just as they do each time but in essence everything still does the same only you have to fathom out a different way to do it.

On the plus side it is infinately more secure having had a peek so this must be a plus point.

But I would recommend not buying it and if you do I would ensure you have at least 1gb of memory before you even think about it. If you get it preloaded on a new PC I would definately go for 2gb of memory particularly if you intend to write video to DVD.

Would I upgrade my main PC's to it. No chance.

Very wise... I forgot to mention this brand new product had about 15 minutes of updates and downloads to install so it looks like at the moment it is a test bed waiting for joe public to test it for them free while paying through the nose for the experience.

Well, I'm having a giggle trying to load anything on Vista. I disabled MS security but still cannot install either comodo firewall or AVG Spy. AVG AV is OK. I am wondering if this is a deliberate ploy to force you to use Vistas own stuff or me being bleedin stupid.

Also within minutes it lost the LAN connection saying it was the routers fault which is was not and then suddenly decided it had made a mistake and reconnected itself.

I have this urge to to take this preloaded crap off my laptop and put XP on instead.

I am now bitterly regretting buying a pirate copy from the Far East for Ģ5.70 especially as it seems that it will still have to be activated after the trial period Embarassed Shocked Twisted Evil
