for checking speeds.
Simply put it has two tests.
1. Simple raw speed test, up and down plus latency
2. As test 1 but also a simulated surfing session to return real world results
It also has a very good 'Your results explained' page as well.
Here's a link to my most recent test

If anyone tries the site and finds it confusing let me know and I'll try and help.
I can also check your phone number to see what sort of speed you should be getting. PM me if you want.
I need to redo my telephone socket wiring, I'm losing a lot of speed due to a poor installation. If I connect to my master socket test socket I increase my sync by over 1mb.

Bryan

My ISP (Plusnet) gives me a speed bandwidth check on one of my account pages. I just log on and it does the test most recently it was 2010.3 kbps I also get my useage and other data. It keeps a record of my tests which I have attached and shows in my case the last time there was a problem.
Don't all ISPs offer something similar?
I do my speed tests normally because MHF seems slow but on the 6th Dec plusnet had a problem with a fire at one of their equipment locations.
Had a reply about slow access from Nuke (see post above about camping map) and he is getting someone in to look at the server.

Get behind early - it gives you more time to catch up.

The problem with their speedtest is that it only measures your speed to their servers whicj will always be the fastest you can get. The benefit is that it is not affected by the 'internet'.
Glacier,
I always used to use that site but find numion more comprehensive.

Thanks Bryan for that link, I think it about the best I have tried, but the others from other members have been usefull.
I must check with Karoo about what speed I should get for £17.99 a month or if there are any other packages. We cannot take advantage of other companies as Karoo has the monoploy iin the Hull area.
Has it passed unnoticed that MHF is now performing very well again, the pages are downloading as they used to,nice and quick on my 4mb broadband connection and on a par with other web sites.
Nuke must have had the repair man in!

There are now a whole host of speed testers out there - some of which have been mentioned in this thread.
I particularly liked PCPitstop - although I wasn't too sure of the results as they looked a little generous. Will try it again later.
The one I use is Dan Elwell's speed test which can be found

It is a very thorough test and runs far more detailed tests than the others.
Having said that it is presented in any easy to understand way.
There is a free version but this does not do everything the full version can.
I paid the one-off £10 for the full version a few years back when I couldn't persuade my ISP that I had problems. The nice thing about the registered version is that it saves all of your tests and can produce factual reports to send to your ISP as proof. Mine certainly changed their attitude with that so it was well worth the tenner!
Humber Traveller - this may be what you need to make Karoo listen to you. It's so easy to blame other things like, BT, your phone connections, the way you set it up etc.
