I understand and appreciate what you say pusser, but is AVG really free if you have to register to upgrade, and does it constantly monitor and block any malicious stuff or do you have to scan for it (in which case its already on your system) Its a Bl**dy minefield and as a mere "user" I haven't a clue really.
I haven't set up my new system properly yet until I decide weather to use the pre installed Norton or seek alternatives.
AVG is really free and you do not need to register for the free AVG Anti virus. Neither do you need to register for the AVG anti spyware. If you find you are being asked to register then you are trying to download the wrong one.

I've just checked, I have the 7.5 version, but as I suspected, if you look under the "shield" icon, the shield is not available for the free version.
So this is NOT FREE protection, it relies on you scanning your already infected system.

You can update the version for free, but to get the shield (which scans stuff BEFORE it reaches your machine,) then you pay.

I have the AVG 7.5 Free version and have had no problems that I know of. The AVG Pro you have to pay for so I downloaded zonealarms firewall and Microsoft windows defender for spyware. AVG seems to do daily updates (mostly) now I am on broadband.
I too bought a new laptop Acer (Aspire) 5634 WLMI and it had Norton antivirus but when I went to instal it showed it as Norton 2005! As I was still on dial up at the time trying to instal updates were taking forever and because the ISP usually cuts you off after 2 hours of being online I found I couldn't update as it would cut off before being finished and if I went back online it started the whole process again from scratch!!!! So in the end I downloaded AVG 7.5 then uninstalled Norton and then installed AVG and since all is ok.
Bit much though having Norton 2005 on a supposedly new laptop!!!! bought beginning Jan 2007. Comet must buy in old stock!!!

Hi Badger
Sorry, but before everyone running the free 7.5 version of AVG gets worried that is not right ...the free version does protect from viruses that arrive in downloads from webpages or email and the "Resident Shield" status is shown in the Control Center window...it is running all the time ...
In fact if anyone wishes to test this there is a website that can test your antivirus... it will let you try to download a virus..albeit a harmless one, as a test.
For those "brave" enough to do a test go

*** Please read all about it before testing....*** read the small print below too
There are 4 different types of virus file download there ... AVG will not allow the eicar.com file to download ....it will however allow the eicar.txt file and the zip files to download but either of these will be caught if they are accessed or opened.... not as good as the best virus protection ..

AV on my main PC does not allow any access and as soon as I click on any of the four links it detects the test virus..... and stops the process.

P.S.
The differences between the free version and the pay version are shown

Thank you for putting me right on that Mike, however, if you open AVG up and click on the shield icon. It tells you that the resident shield is innactive on the free version.
So........Going back to Astra's Original post (sorry if we took over Astra)
Is all this freeware good enough and what exactly would we need (ie anti virus/spyware/firewall etc.) to give sufficient protection.
I don't mind paying, but would I get better protection if I did.

Yes sorry for sidetracking your post but I hope you are finding it interesting.... antivirus seems to frighten the hell out of most folk... me included when I get to sort out some PCs that end up on my office floor
Hi Badger
I am at a loss to follow your description of "click on the shield" below are two images of the current latest version of AVG free... does your Test Center and Control center look like these screen shots?
No they don't, and you prompted me to examine more carefully. I am at work at present and (I believe) have the same AVG installed at home and on closer inspection it seems to be AVG anti spyware, not Anti virus so that would account for the difference. Thanks.
(as different from and old lady an a bike.........thats an anti cyclone....
