By sad I meant there were a lot of them 2/3rds of the way to becoming alcoholics because they didnt seem to have a clue how to spend their spare time on anything a bit more productive in the way of hobbies etc.
Well, who's to say they weren't happy?

I expect worrying about were the next bottle is coming from is all the need to occupy their minds.
Seriously, a lot of people just sit about at home when they retire, in exactly the same way they are in spain, but a least the weathers better.
I would imagine just sitting around can get very attractive after a while, I would like to think I would get out and about, but who knows until your there. Its whatever makes you happy surely?

Sitting around waiting to snuff it, blow that lifes too short. I enjoy a pint or two but make sure I get out and try and get some exercise thats why I took up metal detecting as a hobby, lots of walking, digging, climbing hills etc. I used to do a lot of fishing but that meant just sitting around waiting for a bite and zero exercise. A lot of people retire out of office jobs and just vegetate and then pop their clogs before they can enjoy their pensions and retirement. I still have 5 years yet to go but am practising already for the day when I can hand over the business for rest of the family to run.

Chacun a son gout, as the French have it (apologies to Crackle after his excellent Froggist rant).
Tony, it may surprise you to know that some people consider metal detecting as a seriously sad waste of time.
Amazing, isn't it? What could be more exciting than that tantalizing rise in pitch of the whine in your ears as once again the Pikemaster IIIb Tatfinder detects yet another Coke can from a bygone era, followed by frantic grubbing in the sod?
You see? It's a case of each regarding his lifestyle as the only way to fulfillment.
When of course, there are many.
