Hi having exhausted my rudimentary network knowledge I need HELP!

I have 3 computers, 2 towers and 1 laptop, the two towers are hardwire to a router/modem, the lappy is on wifi to the same router/modem, up to last week no probs then I realised the laptop wouldn't connect to the two towers but would connect to the internet, the two towers are talking happily to each other, so the network is ok.

Doing an ipconfig seems ok. apart from "Ethernet adaptor local Area connection" Media State..............Media Disconnected

Any ideas??

Olley

Hi Olley

The problem is with the network not the Internet Access ... so check you still have a wireless network set on the laptop .... look in My Network Places on the Laptop.......Check the Workgroup name on the laptop, right click on the My computer Icon on the desktop> Properties > Computer Name...it has to be the same workgroup name on all networked computers.

p.s. I don't understand how you are connecting to the internet without an IP address.

Olley must have an IP address showing in the ipconfig report ( he says .. Doing an ipconfig seems ok.)...... he has just not told us that bit from the ipconfig report ... what he has said is only relevant to the ethernet card on the laptop and that message he is getting is correct ... the card is not in use.

Hi spykal your right I do have an ip address and I can "ping" the other two computers, but they don't show up in my network places, they all have the same workgroup name. The 3 of them have been happily talking to each other for about 3 years now.

I did swop from modem shared connection, to a router/modem about a month ago. first notice the problem last week when I couldn't use the shared printer. Since then on a couple of occasions it wouldn't connect to the internet either.

Olley

PS ipconfig also says: Connection-specific DNS Suffix..:domain_not_set.invalid

The rest of it is normal

Hi Olley
I am sure we are missing something very simple here but sometimes Wifi and XPs implementation really P**s me off partly because I am constantly learning new quirks and partly because it does strange things sometimes Rolling Eyes ...

If it were me I would hook up the laptop with an ethernet cable and establish the network is working OK.... I hope you have a vacant socket on the router. Then if the network works when wired I would go back to Wifi and hope Rolling Eyes

hi spykal I thought Idea I have another router lets give that a go, plugged it in, connected router/modem to it and guess what.......zilch internet access and thats it, network has completely gone down. Sad

Change back, still no network at all, but all have internet access?? and now none of them can "ping" the other.

Is the sun past the yard arm yet?? I need a drink and a biggggg hammer.

Olley

Have you run the network wizard on each computer?
