There is some discussion going on on the "Downtime last night" thread but I thought it might be more helpful to start a new thread.

We are all aware of the current server problems, and Dave has told us of a solution, with cost implications.

I've been a member of this site from reasonably early on and I think it is developing really well, and is picking up new members at quite a rate.

It is a real shame that the problems are hitting us now, when maybe a load of new potential members are having a look.

Dave has told us that there are significant costs in hosting on our own server, could you quantify this so that members can judge what we can do about meeting these costs.

A thought that I had which may raise some cash is, that we all have knocking around our houses and vans things that we no longer use, but may be of value to others, Why don't we have our own auction site, where people can sell unwanted items and donate them to "club funds".
Alternatively this could be done through Ebay and the funds donated the same way.

One way or the other we must find a way to keep the site going.

Let's put our thinking caps on

I will definately be chucking some money in when I can. My prob is that my wife does not allow me a credit card or bank account because she thinks I am irresponsible with money - can you believe that I ask you. Whether it is because we were always broke when I handled the money or the fact that I have been bankcrupt 3 times already had any influence on her decision I don't know. However, we are now nicely settled finanacially but she is most unlikely to give me a chq for anything. Therefore I have to resort to subtif - bugger- deceit. As soon as I get a client I know who owes me money I will get him\her to write it out to DukeNukeadmin instead.

What we all have to bear in mind is that surely we must save a lot of money simply by the advice we get, advance info on good places to stay etc and therefore the odd tenner is well worth it I think.

I did wonder if DukeNuke became an agent for and Insureance company and\or ferry companies etc then if we booked through the site he would get the agents commission. The downside I suspect is the extra work but that has to be balanced against the extra income.

I had to leave a Navy site because they decided to charge £5 pm which I suspect was reasonable but impossible under my circumstances and so I had to leave. But if I can chuck some funds in now and again which is not going to set the world alight but every little helps so they say.

So everyone has to sit down and think what value is this site to them personally and what benefits they get out of it. Do they make savings in money, time etc. Entertainment value, general interest value. So i would urge all to have a go that can afford it. Those that can't is not a prob and I suspect the once a month visitor can hardly expect to have to pay but their once a month imput could be of great importance and of value to us all.

I've rambled on so long I have lost the plot again so I will shut up. Embarassed

One thing I've noticed which gives cause for concern.

Of the £110.00 donated so far (leaving out David's £20.00) only £103.78 is actually available. The shortfall presumably has benefitted Paypal.
There should be a better way to donate without losing some of the donation. Perhaps by Switch to a special Bank account kept only for this purpose for those who want to use this method. An internet account?

A person is more likely to donate if they know that all of their donation is going to the organisation they are supporting.

i wish you were my bank manager Jeffus...I wish i had a bank manager.

Thanks for your understanding. It's an odd situation to be in but it was self inflicted so I cannot grumble.

Cheers..
