Whilst replying to another post on here I wondered how many of you, especially those who store their vans over winter use the A/C
Did you know lack of use can cause your system to leak and lose its refrigerant esp those running in R134a?
Should be in the owners Manual
so here is my recomendation....
To all you MH owners with cabicon, do remember to use the A/C Button * in winter for at least 10 mins or so about every 2-4 weeks at least. This will allow the compressor to pump refrigerant and in-turn oil around the system keeping your seals nice and moist. Failure to do so may (will long term) result in the seals drying out, shrinking and your refrigerant leaks out!
This does not apply to Habicon Systems as they should be hermeticaly sealed.
And yes you can get drop-in replacements for R12 and do not have to have expensive retrofit work carried out
PM me if you need any fruther info

Most manuals supplied with cars advise the owner to run the air con on a monthly basis when not in regular use. No explanation was offered as to why.

I continue using my Aircon on the renault throughout the winter as I think it gives a better hot air than without, can you see a negative side to this.
I did not realise about the hab aircon in the MH, I have dutifullybeen switching it on for a while every other week
maybe this is why ours doesnt work ! we have a 2001 Hymer and cab aircon has never worked, as we have never needed it yet we keep forgetting about it, to be honest it was a good few months before I said hey whats this * button for ?
So......where will I get this fixed and how much will it cost ? I am sure April in France will be ok and as we are leaving home in 3 days no time anyway
yaiks better get packing !
good info thanks

hi i may have this problem...worked fine last time out "october" BUT NOT KICKING IN NOW is this just a case of needs re gasing?
Hello there,
Generaly if the air outside is above say +5 - + 8 Degrees, the A/C comprressor should kick in. If it does not, it may have lost some or all of its gas and the LP (low pressure) switch will go open Circuit, preventing the clutch on your compressor kicking in.
Try the fuses/check switches first ! If this fails you need to get some gauges fitted to the system by a regrigeration Engineer to assertian if there is any pressure in there. If you have a R134a system it will need special gauges to fit.
If there is a relative amount of back pressure in the system, then it either does not need gas and the problem is elsewhere, or simply requires re-charging to the correct level.
If there is no pressure, I would recomend OFN (oxygen free nitrogen) be used to carefully pressurise the system to test for obvious leaks. If no leaks are evident (hissing sounds from hoses or condenser (in front of radiator)) then I would suggest the unit be evacuated and charged.
If you have slow leaks then Glow agents may be added to trace where the stuff is going to.
Please come back if you need any further advice.

stew
Hello Stew,
If by better air you mean drier, then yes the A/C will dehumidify the cold damp air. The A/C may not always be operating even if you have it switched on via the dash. This is because the systems LP switch will go open circuit to prevent the unit operating in low ambient conditions.
No problem in using A/C for dehumidifying in winter but do expect 2-5% increase in fuel consumption when you do use it.
Hope this helps

Make sure your aircon radiator is clean, wash it through with a pressure washer on low power[B].
When I owned a 4x4 I'd noticed the aircon wasn't very good, so took it to an aircon specialist on a Saturday morning (cash only!!) and had the gas checked. There was no problem with the gas, so next he squirted a hosepipe through the A/C radiator and washed out a load of crud and miraculously the temperature started falling dramatically!!
He told me that this is quite a common problem and garages make quite a profit when they only have to clean the radiator and not re gas and forget to tell the customer.
Worth checking first.
