Hi
I was talking to a couple tonight, they are about to travel through Austria with a 4x4 and big caravan, and are trying to find out if they have to carry snow chains, if so, do they have to carry 1 pair or 2 ?? I said if it's cold enough to need chains they ought not to be there (they didn't see it my way)
I told them I don't have a clue But I'm sure I "know" someone who could tell me, am I right?

Hello there,

My advice is YES you must take snow chains if driving through Austria.

On the law side:
Without doing research on here and altavista/google/yahoo etc then I would not know. I have been told that you would not be allowed on Austrain Alpine Passes without Winter tyres (or those bearing the snowflake or severe winter icons) and snowchains.

On the legal side:

If you were to be involved in an accident without the aforementioned or moreover, if you were to have actually caused an accident due to the lack of these then rather you in the dock (or your mates) than me. Furthermore, rather they tug a van than me too.

Hope this helps?

Trev
