I've had my van insured with Comfort for the last ten years and always found them very helpful.

I can confirm there are no restrictions on the RAC cover but there could be if the vehicle is over ten years old.

There is one big drawback in Section X Continental use it states.

"If for any reason your vehicle will not be in your custody or control for a period in excess of 36 hours then you must notify Comfort Insurance in advance".

This has caused a lot of problems to people who winter in Spain/Portugal and fly home for a couple of weeks at Christmas and leave their van on site abroad.

This also causes us grief because in the past we have left the van on site in Helsinki and done a five day tour to St Petersburg on the train.

I have spoken at great length to Pat Cue at Comfort and she states that normally they will not agree to a van being left on a campsite but will treat each case on its merits.

We have now solved the problem, next time we want to leave the van it will be stored in a car hire rental secure storage at one of the airports.

This is very inconvenient if like us you just want to go off for a five/six day trip but if you are flying home for Christmas it's no big deal. Unless of course the car hire compounds get over run by motorhomes.

It will be interesting to see what restrictions other insurers have imposed along these lines.

So please get your policies out and do a check please.

Here are my experiences ringing around for first time insurance for our new m/home for what they are worth.
[b:0dee700c06]Caravan Guard [/b:0dee700c06] couldn't quote because the Moncayo was not on their system despite them being recommended by Barrons who sell Moncayo's
[b:0dee700c06]Saga[/b:0dee700c06] very good price but only by using my no claims bonus off our Espace which meant £350+ just for 3rd party on the Espace
[b:0dee700c06]Caravan Club[/b:0dee700c06] very good price but again only by using my no claims bonus.

The two best were [b:0dee700c06]MCIA[/b:0dee700c06] and [b:0dee700c06]Comfort[/b:0dee700c06]. both very friendly, very professional and both were prepared to give a discount matching the no claims bonus thus allowing me to leave the insurance on the Espace alone.
like for like there was £3 difference both included Europe wide breakdown cover. Anyone like to recommend which one? a difficult decision.

Further to the above, [b:61362e555c]Comfort[/b:61362e555c] won. MCIA breakdown cover was only for 31 days abroad.

Yeh, nice one Sid, I did exactly the same . . . Comfort allow you to stay in Europe 365 days a year with full breakdown cover. RAC Arrival only allow you 90 days at a time and Red Pennant allow about 265 days ish, which they call their long stay option. Jeffus. Cool

I have found that when renewing insurance, any insurance it does not pay to go back to last years company!! We used Saga for a few years for our house cover as they seem to be the only one that will cover for more that a 30 days abstance.

But on the latest renewal I found the there was a discount for new customers, so I called to find out if I could have the same discount for loyalty, NO was the answer so I called again under a false name and address (identical house and district) and found that was 45 ukp cheaper as a new customer.

I challanged Saga and the put come was that they refused to cover me!!

I then went to Tesco and saved 60ukp.

Has anyone thought of Europ Assistance? this is available in the UK as well as Yerp and it should 'do what it says on the tin'.
I would imagine it should be possible to become a member of the local breakdown services, if you could give a 'poste restante'address.
