We've just had the new van weighed. It's fully laden with water and fuel ready for Europe at Easter and is 300 kg under weight. Whew !

We were going to take it to a VOSA weighbridge nearby, as we have done before, when I noticed that our local domestic waste disposal facility ( aka the tip) takes trade waste and so has to have a weighbridge. The young lady who supervises it couldn't have been more helpful. It cost us no more than a voluntary contribution to their coffee fund, took a few minutes and we even have a certificate. She says they are accurate to within 20 kg. We phoned in advance to ask when would be least busy but did not make an appointment time.

Worth looking to see if your local tip has one too.

Hello Griz

That's a very good suggestion.

I used the weigh bridge at Trading Standards Leeds - free. The one near Mansfield wanted about a fiver per axle to weigh the van.

Hi Griz

Bolton Council blatantly charge £9.00 / axle/weigh i.e. £18.00 if you want to be fully certain that you are legal

Whew ! Is that at the tip ? That's exploitation ! Considering that when there are no traders dumping there the weighbridge is empty they could easily do it for free - as our young lady did.

VOSA charged us £5 last year. That was on a weighbridge off the A34 near here. Problem with us using that again is that you can't see if it is open until you are half way up the slip road and if it is not you have to go all the way to Oxford to turn round and come home again ! They open irregularly to random check lorries etc using the A34.

Grizzly has got this wrong we were not charged by VOSA. They did an excellent job and gave us a certificate.
