German 'Ferienstrasse' holiday routes......

What am I babbling on about you may ask;

Well "Deutsche Ferienstrasse", loosely translated, means "German Holiday Roads". They are tourist routes around particular regions in Germany following a particular 'theme'.

Whether you’re going to Germany this year for the first time, or are seasoned travellers, incorporating one of these routes into your holiday itinerary could help to give it a bit more interest.

I’m sure many of you have heard of the more popular well trodden routes, here are a few to jog your memory;

"Deutsche Romantischestrasse"
A route from Wurzburg in the north down to Fussen following charming ‘romantic’ villages

"Moselweinstrasse"
The extremely popular wine route along the banks of the Mosel from Trier to Konlenz.

The main wine route in the Rheinland Pfalz region from Bockenheim, via Neustadt-a-d-weinstrasse down to Bad Bergzabern

"Deustche Uhrenstrasse"
A route around the Swarzewald taking in clock factories, including claims from several towns to have the largest cuckoo clock in the world.

No, not a breakfast cereal route but an scenic route along the northern fringe of the bavarian Alps from Lindau on Lake Constance right across to Berchtesgarden, it also continues into Austria).

The above are some of the better known routes but there many, many others not quite as well known but there is usually something that will fit into your plans depending on where you’re going and what your interests are. A list of some other routes....

"Deutsche Schuhstrasse"
Might be of interest if the Lady of the household has severe ‘Imelda Marcos’ tendencies, based in and around Hauenstein, it’s a mixture of good quality shoeshops and factories along with the German shoe museum at Hauenstein itself.

The German fairy tale route from Bremen to Hanau, good for kids young and old.

The German Toy road. A route taking in toy manufacturers and shops stretching from Waltershausen down to Nurnburg.

Following a nautical theme the route takes in everthing to do with water, bridges, ferries etc in Northern germany.

The last link is an excellent interactive map for many of the hoiday routes. Just click on 'scenic routes' on the lefthand menu and then select the route you're interested in to display the map.
