Hi, Hopefully someone can help, I have checked via search but cannot find anything so please don't shout at me.
Stupidly, Filled my freshwater tank whilst away last week via a new hose I had just purchased, needless to say I now have to use bottled water as the taste is disgusting, I tried pouring a bottle of orange Squash in the tank and leaving it for a day but this had no effect, what can i do to remove the overpowering 'flavour'. I have left the cover off now to let air get to it, would sterillising tablets be any good or is it just fill, flush,fill etc

hi we used milton a couple of years back and it did the trick,don't use to much though as it may taste the same.

Are you sure that it's the hose that is at fault. Water left in the freshwater tank and especially the pipes at this time of year when the weather's hot, can soon smell disgusting. I flushed my system yesterday and the water from the taps initially smelled awful despite having last been used only a week or so earlier.

Many people, myself included, use tank water for domestic purposes and keep a separate container for drinking water use - or even use bottled water.

If your new hose is a standard garden green hose then yes you have tainted the tank - we did this once and the taste was awfull since the green hoses are NOT food grade!! However if you have the correct blue hose it will be food grade and should be OK.

I would recommend filling your tank with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and leaving it overnight then doing the milton solution for a few hours after that. This should clear out any tastes. Maybe a few repeat a few repeats would help.

We are full-timers so our fresh tank is constantly being refilled (about every 3 days) We use tank water for boiling, but not for cold drinks. We simply fill a couple of 5 litre water bottles, that seealso m to last about days.

Eventually the fresh tank does get manky, we first noticed the smell of the shower water. It wasn't helped by the fact we dropped a little mud in the tank one day when being nosy!

Anyway, to clean them we 1/2 filled with water, put about 500ml of Milton in and drove for 1/2 an hour. We then rinsed the tanks the same way twice, and it sorted the problem a treat.

The other option is to buy a water filter.

BTW you probably havent done yourself any favours with the orange squash!!!! - its got lots of sugar in which bacteria will love Crying or Very sad

Thanks for all your replies, yes i did use a garden hose....! and I put Orange squash in as I had read it either in a MMM or on a forum. Will go and get some Milton and bi carb. Where do you get food standard hoses from? as I now seem to own enough garden hose to supply the street!

You can get short length or big reels.

We have a the colapsable 20m one on a small drum - about 30pounds (money - my keyboard at work doesnt have a pounds sign) Rolling Eyes

But shop around.

Like benandlizzie, we use bottled water to make cold drinks; however, we also use "Elsil" in the fresh water tank. This makes the water safely drinkable (whether you choose to or not), has [u:3fd38d9634]no taste[/u:3fd38d9634] and [u:3fd38d9634]no smell[/u:3fd38d9634], and means that salads can be safely prepared using tap water, water used in cooking is safe irrespective if boiled or not, and you can clean your teeth with the tap water! It's infinitely superior to chlorine and all the other similar treatments, and it doesn't need filtering (for taste/bacteria, etc)

I Can vouch for Elsil too, I got it after being recommended by I think someone on MMM forum ages ago, evidently the airline industry uses it for inflight tanks, so I guess it has to be good Wink
