I'm getting rid of most of my furniture but want to keep my bed, new washing machine, some kitchen bits and pieces and boxes full of books, CDs, clothes and a few knick-knacks. (I plan to find another permanent base within the next year or so)

There's too much to ask someone to store it in their garage, so wondered if anyone can suggest the best way to sort out storage?

I've seen adverts for Big Yellow Storage, and there is one in Southampton I could use, but I've been told they're much more expansive than other companies?

Any ideas?

Hi Denise,

I looked into storing stuff when I sold my house. Unfortunately, it appeared to be cheaper to sell it all and replace it in 18 months than to put it into storage.

One place was asking for £24 per week for a small container - enough to fit washer/dryer, fridge etc into. As we also wanted to store our car the cost was just prohibitive so we decided to sell up everything except for the car and just start from scratch when (if) we come back! (this included a 6 month old soft chocolate leather sofa which I coveted for years, finally bought and now sold ... I miss it already Crying or Very sad )

We are still working on storage for the car as we had it arranged then it fell through. Bummer! Crying or Very sad

Have you any friends who can hide a very old van on their property somewhere. If so, buy a ridiculously old van, fill it up and park it in the front garden of your friends for a year or two. It will give them something to remind them of you. This would be the cheapest option providing a friend has sufficent land to stick it on. Alternatively, do the same thing and rent a lock up garage to stick the van in.

Or don't by a van but rent one and pile the stuff in the lock up garage,.

Actually, 'someone' had a pretty good idea Very Happy
(Could you PM me his address by the way? It was a remarkably kind offer, wasn't it?! Wink )

But I will try Google as well Smile

I wouldn't be too upset about getting rid of the bed and washing machine (I'm in two minds about giving the bed to my son anyway), but there's still the boxes of books, CDs, photos etc that I won't part with! Shocked Probably just about the right amount to fit into an old transit!

Cool and someone IS going away on his hols soon! ah, and i just remembered i have a huge camoflauge(?) net, so someone might not even notice it was there when he got back lol-
don't know where his pad is, but we could ask a taxi driver, they seem to know everything! I think i have also heard of the Big yellow box, storage thing, not sure what its like tho. I would offer you my attic, but its already home to about 20 years of collected stuff! Tho i am not such a hoarder as i used to be, getting quite good, at keeping out of the Charity shops, actually i have overcome the habit altogether (well, nearly-sometimes look but hardly ever buy now) hubby says THANK HEAVENS! you could try a black hole?

Someone has just to decided not to bother with his holiday but instead, give camping a try and pitch a tent on his lawn. Sad

If its only books, cd's etc, how about asking a friend/relative if you can store the stuff in their loft? We boarded a small part of the mother-in-laws loft out so when we have finished using it then she has actually gained some extra storage space for herself, and a roof light as we threw that in too Wink .

Grand total of storage costs has now come to about £15 plus a couple of hours sweating in a loft in the height of summer. Not bad really Laughing (of course, i didn't actually get into the loft, my more agile half did that, I supervised Cool )
