Reading as many posts as I do I get to notice that sometimes when a poster is asking for advice that sometimes a helpful soul will come along who knows exactly how to deal with the situation... but then to my dissapointment he will add " please PM me and I will help you" or words to that effect.
Now I know I should not be criticising these helpers, but why do it by PM?.... many of us will have read the original question and would like to hear the solution. Some of the readers of the thread may even have the same problem and would benefit from seeing the reply
What do you think, have you noticed this trend or is it just me?
Mike
______________________________________________________________ When confronted by a problem, you can solve it easily by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger have handled this?"
I have done it, but just once and it was because at the time I was sick of getting criticism every time I offered help, usually when I offered an inexpensive solution and the super rich on this site just wanted to throw money at every problem. Something like - you don't want a £50.00 one like Ralph said, you can get one here for £1,500.00 -
I got a thank you and the member used my advice, it was not something that would have made any difference in open Forum anyway.
I totally agree with trying to keep stuff in the open. I'm sure I am not the only member who has learnt gobsmacking amounts from the experience and advice shared by others. I've said it before - the forums inform, motivate and entertain me - nowhere could i buy that.
i agree too, it can't be nice being criticised by someone when you have offered help based on your own hard-earned experience. Just two things about this:
1. Most of us with half a brain know that learning from others' experience is smart and we enjoy the challenge of solving problems and not just throwing money at them. So someone who just wants to just be a smart ass is pretty plain to see.
2. It is called a FORUM and so all comments have the right to be voiced, even the vile, bad tempered, get-a-life, I-know-better-than-you ones. I suppose the caveat of within the bounds of common decency does apply too.
So hey, I'll show you mine if you show me yours - works well.
Ray
snip :- I thought of leaving the forum at one stage till i received some PMs.
So glad I didn't though and thanks for the support via PM I received
Hi RR
That is what PMs are for ..personal messages ... I have had some belters in my time
but what I get a little peed off with is the " members name you have a PM" type of post that pops up in the middle of an active thread discussing a technical problem .... it does, as Jim says, make me wonder if the information in the PM is "top secret" It certainly makes me feel excluded and if it makes me feel like that ( a hardened forum user ) what does it do to a newbie.
Mike
P.S. by the way ..if you do wish to draw a members attention to the fact they have a PM try using the shout box ...it works for me

Have to agree with that point Mike, and it is not just on techy stuff that it happens either..... Then just look at the threads that turn into "chat rooms" with 2 - 3 people having a chat that usually wanders off topic at some point (never seems to attract the off topic police though ) to almost the exclusion of everyone else. These threads quickly become boring to the majority and people lose interest but the posters keep them alive for ages.....................................
Anyway now I have rabbitted on and gone off topic I will humbly apologise and return to your point Sometimes people will offer advice by PM (I do) because they get sick and tired of being lambasted over the info they put in the forum, some people have worked hard here to provide info and then been flamed because of it (RR seems to be an example), so this is why it happens Mike in my honest opinion
