Maybe I am one of the posters that you are referring to? I have answered a couple of posts for help recently with the suggestion that the poster p.m. me. The reason that I have done this is that usually the question has already been answered many times in the past and I don't want to bore the forum readers with the same old answer. Either way, everyone to their own.
I tend to use PM's for private matters. I have recently contacted a member to organise a service for my motorhome, something which is of no interest to anyone else. I also used them to thank someone personally as well as thanking them on the forum, if they have gone the extra mile so to speak
Chopped quote :-Maybe I am one of the posters that you are referring to? ........ I don't want to bore the forum readers with the same old answer.
Nick.
Hi Nick
If you have done it then yes I must be referring to you .. but as I have already said: I would not criticise your offered help in any way... but as to boring the long standing forum readers with "the same old answer"... well I feel like saying "tough" to those old forum members , but I won't ...
So I do know what you are saying and I have often offered a link which guides the questioner to the answer hidden in the depths of MHF ( as long as I can remember where it is) Sometimes I have, like you, PMd a questioner with some info, but for the reasons I have given above I usually keep the fact that I have PMd to myself.
Every day new members will join up and ask the same old questions and I just feel that the answers, however boring to the old hands, may be appreciated by many others if they are presented in the current thread.
But if you feel happier answering in a PM please continue to do so...
Sorry to have gone on and on ...the Victor Meldrew syndrome strikes again

Hi Mike ,I take it you are refering to me also, no offence taken and purly to answer your question why I did it that way was to avoid breaking the rules of the forum, as the answer could/would have been taken as an attempt at advertising my services or goods, and whilst the answers would certainly have benifited many, I felt restricted to PMing the answer to the poster only, and beliving the poster wanted an answer, was online and for whatever reason not picking up his/her PMs then another post informing them that they had a PM seemed the most logical

Edit PS. and it worked

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didnīt.
Posters should always be aware that MHF posts are instantly readable to anyone in the world. PMs are ideal for giving personal information - like home or email addresses which are not top secret but not a good idea to broadcast freely to the world.

Thanks for that Paul, I think you have unwittingly hit on something here, that means if anyone in the world can see this ,we could call it the World Wide Web and have each page with its own address that starts with www. what do you reckon?getting up off the floor now and going for a lie down
