Lots of campers have sleeping facilities, cooking facilities, storage etc but no toilet/bathroom. I know these campers are popular as they sell in their thousands and are always in demand. The positive points are fairly obvious, they are compact and can fit in a garage (well some of them can) but how on earth do you manage without a toilet?
I mean if you have children and lots of these campers have sleeping berths in the pop up roofs just for kids it seems to me that at some time or other you are going to have to answer the call of nature.
OK, so on a camp site, fine (unless in the middle of the night ) but what about on the beach or off the beaten track or any other of the numerous places you could be where there isn't a public loo - what then?
There is probably a very good reason why people buy them, but I am just being very nosy and would like to know how they manage without what I consider to be the most important facility in the van.

I've seen several types with a porta-potti that fits in a cupboard somewhere. This would be fine for use on the beach though you'd have to draw all the blinds and shut the doors first. I can't imagine what you'd do at night.
I wonder if toilet tents are still on sale ? Our first caravan used one of those with an Elsan which was only a glorified bucket. We used to leave the van at a no -facilities site and go out there for odd nights when we could. I remember taking the children on my own. Eldest son was desperate when we arrived and I put the loo out and the tent over it with no guy ropes or anything. He must have lost his balance as the next thing I knew the whole structure, tent, porta-pottie and little boy rolled slowly over onto it's side on the grass. It took a long time to get over that !
I don't think it would be a big problem - after all most people go out for the day in ordinary cars without worrying too much.
I'm sure many campers carry Porta Potties.
When we went tent camping our Porta Pottie was an essential item and it stood in one compartment of our inner tent. Split in half it was not too difficult to store with our camping equipment in our Volvo estate.
Out for the day - yes well as in a car, no problem, but people actually tour in these campers.
Porta potti Spend thousands on state of the art vehicles then have to pull a posh bucket out of a cupboard to do your business in with little or no privacy, I cant see it myself.
Grizzly, I needed the loo laughing at your story, your poor son. I hope he doesn't know you are still re-telling that story.
Well, I'm not convinced yet that buying a camper without a proper loo makes sense...but I am willing to be converted

We've had 2 small van conversion campers in the past (as opposed to MH's more recently) one old one years ago had no loo, (except a bucket!!!) the later one a portapotti in a cupboard.
The whole point of theses vans is their car-like qualities they can be used as everyday transport, and they are a step up from tent camping, but still in a way they are camping as you do really need to be on a campsite for all but overnight stops.
If I were to buy one in the future, being soft now, it would have to have a loo compartment, but believe you me it all works absolutely fine so long as you are of a basically camping mindset.

For 19 years I had vans with no loo. When you have none you can't really wild camp but apart from that its ok. I've just been on a months holiday in the present one and just as a guess I reckon I used it about 10 times. I used the fold down sink about 15 times and the shower not at all. Oh and we washed dishes in the sink about four or five times we filled up with water twice emptied the cassette three times maybe four.
Unless you are in an RV the loos in the campsite are more comfortable both for you and the other occupant of the van.

Thats pretty much how I define the difference between a camper van and a motorhome. To be a motorhome it must have toilet/shower facilities otherwise you are just camping
My previous camper, T4 High top had a porta potti in a cupboard.
It was great, but then there's only one of me (they broke the mould!!)
Had a curtain to pull across that section of the camper to conceal my dignity. It was fine, not really a problem but I have to admit that I do like the seperate loo/shower I have now.
