The other is when in a tight bend with a front wheel drive it is better to keep the foot on the accellerator and maintain traction rather than brake when the vehicle will tend to drift off the road rather than keep on it.

Now I'll wait for the flak. Smile

Thats what I thought Gillian but my driving instructor frowned upon it! Laughing Laughing

Actually, when doing this in a Ford Mondeo, the rear wheels have a habit of hopping slightly sideways as they lose traction!! Embarassed

Hi,

while the advice to not step on the brake in panic is clearly sound, one has to consider that the video was made for rear-wheel-driven RVs. And most of our European motorhomes are front-wheel-driven. And have manual gearboxes.

The basic physics behind it is of course the same, no matter whether RWD or FWD. However that means that when a front tyre blows at an FWD, there will be no corrective effect from stepping on the accelerator, because the forward force and the new sideward force from the blown tyre will increase proportionally. So the best emergency procedure for FWD vehicles would be:
  1. Do not move your right foot!
  2. Compensate the new sideward force by carefully correcting with the steering wheel. Do not overreact! Most accidents and turnovers in such cases are not caused by the tyre blow itself but by overreaction of the driver.
  3. Once you have regained control: Gradually release the accelerator, step on the clutch (if you have one) and only then reduce speed by careful operation of the brake.

So says the physicist. Wink
Still hoping that I will never have to try this in practice.

Best Regards,
Gerhard
