Having not yet had a good experience in our motorhome we keep on trying and were going to Southend tonight but now the darn thing won't start - again! Used it 2 or 3 weeks ago and went to Oxfordshire - no problems just terrential rain but it all worked fine. Had it plugged in since then, tried to start it yesterday wouldnt go, so jump started it (easily) last night, left it running for 45 mins, took it for a 25 min run, got home, won't start again. My husband is working all day until late evening and we wanted to go straight off. I cannot drive it. Rang our nearest suppliers, whom we have brought many items from, but they said as we didn't buy it from there they wouldn't give any advice! Huh! we run a photography business but would give anyone advice if they asked us!
Help - any suggestions, I think this will be the last straw as we were all looking forward to going and my husband is at the end of his tether.
Hi Roxylady
sounds like your engine battery is not holding a charge or your alternater on the engine isn't putting out a charge you need to have them checked at your local garage they should have a test metre for battery and alternater

Hi Roxylady.
As said you need to go to a good accessory shop or Halfords type place. or if you have a little local garage to have the charge rate checked and the battery as well. you dont say how old it is, but the battery will go down after 2/5 weeks due to the alarm systems etc.being on hookup will not normally charge the cab battery.
would like to know who refused you help.as this was a silly attitude in my opinion as you will now spread bad press instead of good press.
Do you have any breakdown cover with Homestart...if you do call them out ...it sounds like you have a duff battery or altenator as already suggested. The AA or RAC carry new car batteries on the van so save you going to get one... their battery prices are not too bad either considering they could charge more because they are bringing it to you.

Thanks for your advice. We are in Hitchin, Herts, and it was Amber Leisure, Hitchin who refused to give us advice - they are usually quite good but I thought it was very off. I think all I can do is phone the AA as I can't get it to a garage myself.
I feel your pain. There's nothing worse than being all ready to go and not being able to do so.
I'm no mechanic but am able to tell you that we had the same problem. In the end we forked out £65 for a new battery. We actually replaced the leisure battery at the same time and now have no trouble at all. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that you can get through 2/3 days wild camping and know the thing will start when you want to leave.
Motorhomes that have been left for any length of time with the battery connected will always leak power from the battery. If you're not using it for a while then it really is best to disconnect it and store it inside the house.
If you've got AA Homestart then give them a call. It's what you pay your subs for - and call outs to do with batteries and electrical problems represent 80% of their business.
Thanks again everyone (and fellow photographer), will phone AA, wasn't sure if we were covered for the MH but realise we are.
As I said earlier we've had no luck with trips in our MH. It's quite a luxurious 6 berth but we find for 6 of us it's a bit of a squeeze. We have 4 children who constantly argue when we're away, 3 have to sleep up in the cab as our 12 year old is very tall with size 12 feet and he can't stand anyone else sleeping with him in the bed that turns into the dining area. Our bed (in lounge bit) is lovely and cosy. We've been stuck in the mud twice, forgot to lift the step up and mangled it, hit some scaffolding and pulled a rubber strip off the top. We met a nasty farmer in Cornwall even though we'd booked his field for the night. We've not had any good weather yet either, in fact mostly atrocious. As it cost us a lot of money my husband is constantly flapping about the children not looking after it. We also had leisure battery problems and brought 2 new ones. Oh and our toilet fills up very quickly on the shortest trip, not helped that our 5 year old twins want to use it 10 mins after leaving home!!!
Seriously - just wait. The van will get fixed, the sun will come out, your children will find somewhere to play with other children and be totally zonked by the end of the day and you and your hubby will be able to sit in peace with a glass of something chilled whilst looking out over a magnificent view.
And then you'll remember why you bought it in the first place.
Lol, whilst 6 berth is probably accurate it does not mean 6 living does it lol.
We have four children too but we only decided to have the fourth when the first three informed us they were leaving home. We had a van seven or so years ago and I know what you mean, it was hell sometimes, a mum and dad and three teenagers all squashed together.
A lot of our customers are on benefits. One said to me she was going to have a weekend off from her children to go to Butlins. I asked if her mum was looking after the children and she said that she had phoned social services and they were going to give her rest bite that weekend!!! I wonder if that would work so mum and dad could have a weekend away in their motorhome lol.
I know this is off topic but I thought it might give you something to laugh about whilst you wait for the breakdown people. Incidently my wife had a similar problem the other week and the breakdown people put it down to a loose lead. Its been fine since
