Just got back from a nice week away and traveling up the A1 on the way home, van on cruise at a steady 60mph. then a tugger crawls passed me then slows downso I pass him and this happens a few more times. Then another one same again!
I have never been a tugger so I am not sure if its a ritual or something? But It is a bit anoying.
Not just tuggers. It happens nearly everytime I use cruise control. People struggle to get past then slow down. Never figured out their mindset I'm afraid.
Same happens to us, then Tony has to brake and slow down too, he hates it, I have come to the conclusion hat some people just dont like being behind us.

I am pleased it's not just us. It makes me tempted to cruise at 70mph and see if they try it then. But I look at my computer which is always set on MPG and think better of it.
I was a tugger for 20 years so can comment on this after travelling approximately 50,000 miles with a caravan in tow.A caravan is less stable than a motorhome at motorway speeds particularly when overtaking at 60mph.The critical moment is when the caravan just gets past the vehicle that has been overtaken in lane 1.This is when the slipstream effect takes place and a sideways force hits the caravan.
You do get the same thing happening with a motorhome as well but it is far less noticeable than with a caravan.A stabiliser and a well matched towing combination does help but will not stop the slight snake of the caravan as you pass other vehicles.
My guess is that the caravans accelerated to above 60 to overtake you, felt the wobble through the steering just as they got past, were slightly unnerved by it then decided to slow down and settle to the HGV average speed.
I'm convinced some people actually enjoy this little game and do it to alleviate the boredom of a long motorway journey.

Returning from Cornwall today we were overtaken by a tugger in a small-ish car (something like a Mondeo) towing a pretty big twin-axle caravan. We were going about 65 and he must have been well over 70.
Unlike RichardnGill's we didn't see this one again, although we wondered if he made it back home in one piece!
Hi all,
This I would assume is similar to hgv's who seem to pleasure in overtaking eachother regularly, could be to do with the power of each vehicle uphills etc.
I too returned from a trip to Cornwall yesterday, & as I was towing a trailer, stuck to 60 mph. I couldn't believe the speeds of some units (caravans, trailer tents etc) all going past me at 70 plus! snaking merrily on their way. SCARY!!!
Cheers Creaky

Sorry to go a bit away from tuggers passing but I hate motorways so we avoid them whenever possible...motorways do put the miles under your belt so to speak , so when I do use them I usually slot in behind a tanker or the like and trundle along at 58mph. I often wonder, do the guys driving the truck infront of me get annoyed with me being in tow. It is a job to tell ...I have had the occasional wave from one when either of us have taken the slip road and they can see me as I slide past on the left or right.... making me wonder if they own a motorhome too ...or were they perhaps happy that I had kept well back when they were doing overtaking manouvers round the slightly slower trucks. Or maybe it was not a friendly wave at all

Yep I am familiar with people over taking and slowing down again - I have put it down to the fact that they do not like being behind me as the view of the road is obscured.
It is very annoying when they slow down and force you to overtake them again - i get the present mrs to glare at them which normally does the trick.
