If you have a Mondeo pulling an extra ton or so of Van then it will struggle when on a slight incline, hence the M5 Caravan Ban. I have seen what you mean though do not seem to get the same problem with more powerfull motors.
If you have ever driven an underpowered Panel Van and you struggle to get up to 80mph on a Motorway, there is usually some awkward numpty in a car hogging the outside lane. When he eventually moves over you struggle to get past. A similar thing is when you are approaching someone tying up a lane and when you get behind them you have to slow down. Getting back up-to the speed to overtake again can be frustrating to say the least.
Yea I know what you mean with the panel vans Trev. spent a good few years driving them. But once you got over the hill and on the way down the other side no one would catch you back up! (white van man rules, I currently have a new transit on my fleet at work one of the 140's and it is so fast compared to what I use to drive)
What was happening to me was on the flat at 60mph though. My van goes up most hills no problem in top on the cruise without loosing any speed so I could understand it if I was catching them up on the hills but not on the flat.

Richard...
Yes, as a user chooser I have a VW T5 174. However, the one I have now has problems with fuel consumption (not due to my right foot). So I am considering a Merc Sprinter V6 Diesel. Problem is panel van for the UK have had there production suspended until September at the earliest.
This is due to high demand for the V6 engine, not only for the Sprinter but other vehilces in the Merc range
I doubt I will ever tow with it, though if I do I will try to avoid bugging the MH@s
I will be making for the lakes on Wenesday the 6th, via the M6, so if you don't want me to overtake you with my outfit, be sure to maintain a speed of at least 40mph, that way I'll never be able to catch you up.
Sorry to go a bit away from tuggers passing but I hate motorways so we avoid them whenever possible...motorways do put the miles under your belt so to speak , so when I do use them I usually slot in behind a tanker or the like and trundle along at 58mph. I often wonder, do the guys driving the truck infront of me get annoyed with me being in tow. It is a job to tell ...I have had the occasional wave from one when either of us have taken the slip road and they can see me as I slide past on the left or right.... making me wonder if they own a motorhome too ...or were they perhaps happy that I had kept well back when they were doing overtaking manouvers round the slightly slower trucks. Or maybe it was not a friendly wave at all
Mike
Speaking as an hgv tanker driver we have no problem with moho's or tuggers hanging on with us or overtaking either the time we have a problem is when drivers pull in front of us and slow down for no apparent reason, especialy when your hauling 44 ton along it often takes a bit of winding up again. you'd suprised though how many hgv drivers are "weekend gypsies" as we affectionately call you
