I have acquired an adsl wireless router for my pc and a wireless enabled laptop.
The setting up of the connections from the laptop to the pc and the pc to the internet via the router has me flummoxed.
how do I configure the router and the laptop to talk to each other and use either to access the internet?
All suggestions and help gratefully received.

To get a definite answer, you need to supply more info, eg make of router, presumably it has an integrated modem, but if not what sort of modem do you have, and what operating do you have in the PC / Laptop. Also, who is your ISP.
Somewhere on the router there should be a "reset" button, assuming its come from another user pressing that (usually its a little hole into which you stick a pin or similar) will revert to the factory settings. This will avoid any issues caused by a previous user.
The wireless bit usually works "out of the box" - with the router switched on, in the lap top search for wireless networks and see what you find. You can then connect to it.
You need to set up the router with your ISP settings (using IE from the connected machine - is this connected by Ethernet?)
Assuming that the wireless network is working, to share any info between the computers you need to switch on sharing (in explorer right click the folders you want to share, do Properties and then click on the sharing tab.
Tick the network sharing box. This is for XP.
I would strongly advise you to set up encryption on the wireless network, this will need setting in the router and in the wireless connected computer - the laptop. Otherwise any passing laptop user could use your internet connection and potentially access your shared files.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions and info.
The router is a trendnet TEW435brm, connected to the pc via a lan cable. The operating system is XP with service pack 2.
I have reset the router as you suggested, and I can "see" the router from the laptop, with the router set up for wep encryption.
I will try out the rest of your suggestions asap.
Once again thanks for the help.
