HI, We have decided to sell our Boxer Hi-Top after only a year as as we cannot afford to run two vehicles.Once sold I am thinking about buying a V.W. Transporter 1.9td and perhaps getting it professionally converted in stages. The vehicle would also be used as a day to day vehicle.Anyone,s advice would be most appreciated.I do not know how this would effect the type of insurance required as I would also be using the van travelling to various places in relation to my job as a support worker with people with learning difficulties.Thank You.
Davem.

Insurance on any conversion can be a problem, have a look on the forum on http://www.sbmcc.co.uk/ they have a section on legal issues as insurance etc. You might have to ring quite a few insurance companies before you find one that will cover you. If you are only using your van for travelling to & from work it shouldn't be a problem, if however you are using it as part of your job & carrying passengers with you you will probably need extra cover.
I found one of the most difficult times with insurance is before it is converted, I had to convince my insurance that I wanted to use it the same as a car until it was converted & I wasn't using it to run a business or as a trader. Some insurance companies have time limits for how long it is before the the van is converted to a camper. What should also do after the conversion is get the DVLA log book changed to read motorcaravan, this doesn't cost anything just fill in the correct section & send it off.

Try Leisuredrive in Manchester, they have been specialising in VeeDub conversions. They are now VW approved so that should solve any insurance problems. They produce complete vans either supplying the base vehicle or you supply it. Also part conversions such as they trim, you fit the supplied kit built for the vehicle and also variations in between.
They also have agents around the country.
There are dozens of VW conversions - I assume you are talking about the T4. We have an Autosleeper Trident high top on a 1.9tdi and recommend them highly - very economical and nippy so take a peek at the layouts of them for inspiration.
On the subject of bespoke conversions I was aproached by a guy borrowing a corkscrew but actually wanted a good nose round. He had payed 8000+ for a very basic flat top convertion with just a simple bed and storage and was amazed at what we got for 11000 so I would advise having a good look round at 'off the shelf' stuff' much easier on the insurance too.
On a small point you may well actually want a CARAVELLE not a transported. The caravelle is the one with the windows all round and much better for reversing etc. This is what the pros use even though ours says transporter on the back.
Happy hunting

Sometimes also know as a 'multi-van'. Saves cutting holes everywhere!
We changed our Fiat ducato base -[ie boxer but the garages have more 'attitude' !] for a T4 2 years ago, much nicer to drive.
good luck
