Can anyone please advise me about Skype and Skype telephones etc? I know absolutely nothing about Skype at all and wouldnt know where to look or what to look for and whether or not it would be of any benefit to me?
Everyone seems to be talking about Skype and saying how excellent it is and how much you can save on phone calls etc and if it means we can make cheap or free phone calls home to family and friends or our shop when we are in Italy for 6 weeks then it might be a godsend to us. I know when we were in Morocco I returned to a horendous mobile phone bill and if I could avoid a repeat of that I would be well happy.
I will have unlimited FREE internet access via my laptop when I am in Italy due to the new Three mobile broadband modem contract I have just taken out (which should be with me on Friday) so coupled with a Skype phone I might find I have the best of both worlds and complety free or very cheap communication back to the UK during our trip.
I look forward to hearing from all you clever and knowledgeable people and any help and advice will be gratefully received.
Sue

hi,,, its very simple .. just go here
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/
download the skype software to your laptop then open an account.
Once you have an account name and password, you will need to buy credits .. this is very easy.
When you have credits you can use skype to call any number in any country, including mobiles. Also free phone calls to any Skype number ( so if your friends sign up then talk all day for free ).
You will need some headphones with a microphone attached to them which are available in any computer shop.
thats it !

You may find a Skype phone a better opption than the headphones etc far less feedback.

We regularly use skype to speak to our daughter in Australia we just plug speakers and a mic into the laptop and can still go about our business in the kitchen whilst talking to her. The quality is so good that she torments the dogs by calling them and they run around the house looking for her.
Speakers and mic are great if set up correctly and skype has a built in programme for setting up. you do not need to buy any credits doing it this way and it costs nothing. A tip worth remembering is once you are on skype under the help drop down tab is a check for updates tab check it regularly and update if one is available.
over 10 million users cant be wrong. we have used it since it first came out and must have saved a mint in phone calls to australia.

Thanks everyone - your help is appreciated and Skype certainly sounds really, really good. I have aslo heard you can ring landlines and mobiles at very cheap rates, is this true and if so how do you do that from your laptop? Will I need a Skype phone to do that and if so, which make/model phone would you reccomend?
Just one more thing Detourer (who is also a member on here) rang me a few weeks back using Skype (he lives in Spain) and when I was talking to him I noticed there was a short delay and echo his end, is this normal or was it just because he was ringing an ordinary landline phone in the UK?
Thanks again everyone, what would I do without you?

If you download the free skpe software you can get all the information you ask about. The current rate for dialing landlines is 1.4p per minute including VAT which I think is cheaper than most other carriers. It is however not a substitute for your normal landline as you cannot dial emergency numbers and remember in the event of power failures or computer failure you will have no phone line if you only rely on skype.
I mainly use it for overseas calls and if I get a poor connection, recalling/reconnecting usually solves the problem. One problem I have noticed which effects call quality is multitasking. When on a call it is best if users are not doing anything else on the computer and very often switching off video, if you use it, will improve quality especially if users have low end PCs. Quality of calls is also a function of the route the call has taken and if a satellite link is involved you will get noticeable delays.
