There's a definite theme to this thread - "Fireworks frighten my dog so they should be banned"
I consider myself to be an animal lover. I'm not a pet keeper as I prefer to observe them in more of a natural environment.
I believe the dog keeping fraternity (many but not all) have a great deal to answer for before they try to take away other peoples pleasure.
Dogs owned by working couples and left locked in flats all day, dogs left in cars while their caring owners go off shopping etc, dogs just not cared for and abandoned, dogs allowed to crap wherever they like and owners who just don't give a toss about it, dogs who continually bark into the early hours...............................
It's not the dogs fault it's the keepers fault - same as the unruly kids who wander the streets letting off fireworks - down to their parents.
I take it the current dog owning firework banning lobby never enjoyed the fun of standing around a bonfire on a cold, foggy November night watching Dad let off the rockets and bangers.
Just a little tolerance please
tonyt
You obviously live in the country not the town. These fireworks actually rattle my windows.
Again you seem intent in making this into a political 'you want to ban my freedoms' thread. What have christmas decorations (from an earlier post) and dogs in cars have to do with the issue. they seem spurious to me.

I've refrained from posting a reply to this thread because I didn't really have anything on a positive note to add.
However what you've put into words pretty much sums up the way I feel.
I live in a rural area & there are lots of dog owners round here. We would like a dog ourselves but at the moment don't have the time to do one justice. So we have a cat instead. He's kept inside & get's walked on a lead just like a pooch.
Most of the dog owners I know are responsible people. However I & my family have had our share of messy & frightening experiences with dogs & their owners. In my experience the owners first reaction after a negative encounter is to excuse their animals behaviour in some way. I've three children, the two younger two have both been the subject of dog attacks. Two examples, a Wiemaraner & the other a Jack-Russell. On both occasions I was close by & had to place myself physically between my son/s & said dogs, eventually having to lift the child off the ground to prevent the dogs from biting them. The owners reaction on both occasions was to swiftly excuse the dogs actions without as much as an apology.
Do I wish to see ownership of dogs regulated/tightened banned. Err...no. It's down to irresponsible individuals not the dogs. Same issue as the fireworks. Anyone remember the handgun ban. Kneejerk reaction by politicians hoping to provide a panacea to handgun fatalities. Well, where are we now
Banning fireworks IMO will do nothing. Can you imagine phoning the police to report the use of "illegal" fireworks & the response you would get.
Let's all exercise a little bit of tolerance.

Hi All
I voted "only organised events" i like fireworks but the smoke in the air and the smell from the fireworks does my chest in and my youngest son has real trouble sleeping with all the bangs and pops.
Cheers All.

Ban this...Ban that... Ban the other... How come no one has mentioned Ban SEX !!! yet...
Never being backward in coming forward (so to speak), I think we should ban sex. Zededee has already alluded to it in his opening question at 09:19 hrs.
Dougie.

Did I Dougie?
Wouldn't bother me if it was banned . . . I'd rather have a plate of fish and chips these days, they last a lot longer.
I vaguely remember it was more fun than fireworks though!!!
I had fish & chips from the village chippy last night for the first time in a long time. They turned out to be in inverse proportion to sex - they were 'orrible, and repeated all night.
Off topic? Nearly, but not quite (refer again to your 09:19 hrs question).
Dougie.
