I have just spoken to the motoring department of the Association of British Insurers. (ABI) with reference to the EEC directive of 2005/14EC section 18 which allows british insurance companies to insure vehicles purchased abroad to be insured to allow the vehicle to be driven back to the UK. This was past in June 2007 and a letter to the effect was sent out to british insurance companies in September 2007. So why are british insurance companies still denying this?

if you are importing from Germany you purchase Insurance for 15 days at the time you buy the export plate. its not a lot of €'s this covers you back to uk .you can then arrange your uk Insurance to start at the date you enter uk. yes its basic but your covered for third parties which is the most important thing, a mistake on your part could cost milllions?

Yes silversurfa you are correct but my understanding of the new directive is to allow you to obtain fully comprehensive insurance to drive your new vehicle to the channel and beyond and not have the white knuckle ride with third party insurance.

Has it gone through then? I thought there was some sort of technical hitch in passing the legislation? I hope you're correct, it'll take a lot of worry out of the return journey if we can get some decent insurance for the trip.
BTW: Insurance companies notified in September? If so they won't have opened the envelopes yet, never mind implemented it. I worked for insurers for 30+ years and in my experience it'll be 2008 before any of them get around to doing anything about it.
I have imported twice and on both occasions Safegaurd have insured my van on the chassis number .
Regards RustyM
Yes, I'm sure they have RustyM, most insurers will do that. But what they obviously didn't tell you is that the cover doesn't start until you land on UK soil so unless you took out the German 3rd party insurance you were uninsured during your trip to Calais. Until now, UK insurers have been unable to issue such cover, hence the welcome legislation allowing them to do so.
Just an update on this crazy insurance situation. I've just received a letter from Saga confirming that the regulations have been changed but its up to the individual insurer if they wish to issue this cover and at present they are reviewing the situation but are not insuring anyone. Has any one come across an insurance company who have implemented the new legislation and insuring a motorhome whilst its been driven across Europe to the channel.

Can't remember which company it was now but on phoning round for renewal quotes in January I had one "specialist" motorhome insurer refusing me cover because the vehicle was imported - 5 years ago!
