Being a recent convert to Sat Nav and having seen a lorry craned out of a local village after being stuck there for 2 days I wondered if my device could lead ME astray.

Playing with my Garmin yesterday (yes, I know - I'll go blind if I don't stop) I started to notice some "logical but stupid" things that sat-navs are capable of. I was sat in my van outside our place in Cornwall and guess where it says there is a golf-course within resonable travelling distance? Choice of Brittany or South Wales. Hmmmmm. Strangely it also tells me that this course in South Wales is 50 miles nearer than one outside Bristol. Well, strictly speaking, it is - but only if I can persuade the motorhome to float across from North Cornwall to South Wales.

I live just outside Looe and although it correctly tells me that there is a cashpoint 9 miles away (in Fowey - down some winding lanes and over a river crossed by a ferry) it conveniently ignores the two cashpoints (and, indeed, the banks that they are outside of) just down the road in Looe - less than 2 miles away.

Anyway, can't stop. Must drive along some narrow lanes to the nearest cashpoint so I can afford a round of golf in South Wales! I'd love to know the daftest thing member's sat navs have suggested they do.

What make is your satnav?

The worst the Tom Tom has done to us is
We were in Holland and it took us down this oneway street around a bend and it was the entrance to a carpark. I had to reverse all the way back up as no room to turn around. Luckily not much traffic.

Steve

My TomTom sometimes takes me off a dual carriageway, up the off-slip, round the roundabout at the top, and back onto the dual carriageway again!

EXTREMELY annoying, and inexplicable.

Dougie.

Our Navman...

2 years ago we wanted to go from Bonn to Remagen and it calmy took us down the east side of the river before telling us to 'take the next right turn and then take the ferry' Confused
Should have checked the map first I suppose, you can get directly to Remagen down the west side without a ferry.

This year we 'Lost' Italy for the first 100 or so miles then it miraculously re appeared.

Overall though, they are great bits of kit, but now, I always keep an eye on the map as well.

Usually our Tomtom aka Fanny Liz speaks with a calm and measured tone but there are two of us as witness to the fact that, going round the Paris peripherique one day last year, she actually shrieked "LEFT LEFT LEFT TURN NOW" on a particular stretch with lots of directions on it coming thick and fast.

Honest !

Smile

I am Mrs Grizzly and no, it wasn't ! We've always wondered if we actually really did hear it but ...well, we both did.

Sat navs calculate the nearest objects using simple trigonometry and the lat/long of the two points. It's really is as the crow flies! It's one of the reasons I've always been keen on laptop based systems. The screen is plently big enough to display them all on it so I can make an informed choice before setting off.

I think you're being a little unfair here. It's not the sat navs fault that the database isn't 100% accurate. You may know of the nearest cashpoint but that isn't the point is it? If you didn't know where it was would you worry about driving 7 miles further? Mind you, I'd be a bit peeved to find I had to pay for a ferry when I was out of cash and trying to get to a cashpoint. Very Happy

Regards
Doug
