Hi!

First hint: It is "Netherlands", not "Holland". Except if you really restrict yourself to the two provinces of "Noord-Holland" and "Zuid-Holland". Otherwise: Would you tell e.g an inhabitant of Frisia that he lives in Holland, then the effects would be similar as if you would tell a Scotsman that he is English... Shocked Wink

"Wild Camping", and even just spending the odd night in your van on a car park is (still) strictly forbidden, except on private ground and on certain, dedicated places similar to German stellplatz sites, which are called "Kampeerplek". However: This law expires end of this year, but I do not know yet how this will be regulated in future. Probably the decision will be handed down to the local councils, so we can expect a patchwork of different solutions all over the country.

Camp sites, however, are abundant and come in all sizes and outfits. From small, CL-like "mini-campings" up to "caravan parks" catering for several hundred units. From basic up to luxury sites with all the bells and whistles. With the exception of the sites called

a club membership is not required, however can sometimes bring discounts.

June/July is peak season here, so sites at the beach and close to main tourist attractions could be packed full. Nevertheless it should not be a problem finding a site, if maybe a bit further away from the coast. Not a big issue as the public transport network is quite efficient all over the country, and Netherland is famous for her dense network of bicycle trails.

Many thanks Gerhard.
Perhaps June/July is not the best time for the Netherlands then. Is there a good time?

From observations made over many years I would say August is the best time to tour the Netherlands.

Most of the caravanners and motorhomers from there are somewhere else in Europe at those times so campsites should be empty ! Wink Wink

We went to the Netherlands last April and will be going back at the same time next year. The big attraction being the bulb fields and the Kukenhof bulb flower gardens which are quite near to Amsterdam.
It is a great touring country particularly away from the busy industrial South. Think of going up to the Islands in the North Sea apart from Texel which we found a bit commercial. Take the van over or park up and take the ferry. The place is full of lovely towns like Edam and Gouda as well as Amsterdam where there is a good site due east of the city, just off the ring route. You can get a tram into the city for a really good day out. Try the canal boats to get your bearings then think of the great Art Galleries. Don't go for the horse carriages as they are a bit of a rip off.
Sites are there in quantity everywhere, clean and not too dear.
Enjoy it. Next year we are going right up to the North and over the border into Germany.

Hi,

it depends what you want: During peak season the crowds gather in the sea side resorts and on the islands. And in fact most of the people populating the (coastal) camp sites in summer are Germans, in exchange the Dutch take their caravans to Germany that time... Wink

So for visiting the beaches you should avoid the peak season, while just then many of the famous cities (like Delft, Leiden, Utrecht, Gouda and many more) are actually less crowded than at other times. Amsterdam is however a busy place all over the year.

The bulb flowers are of course a spring thing, Keukenhof will be open next year from 20th March to 18th May.

You should not leave Netherlands without having visited

.

An all-year-round attractive place that is quite frequently neglected is the province of Limburg, with its capital Maastricht. A beautiful city, interesting museum, and the food already shows Belgian and French influences. And, for Dutch conditions at least, the area is surprisingly hilly, up to about 300 metres above sea level. (Which is why I always tease my Dutch colleagues that they need breathing apparatus if they go there... Laughing )

And if you are interested in modern architecture, you should not miss Rotterdam.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Thank you for the links to camp sites, Maddie. My ancestors lived in Holland and I have just started to work on my family tree. I looked up some of the place names where they were born etc. and found lots of sites, open all year, so am thinking of planning a trip out of season to go and explore ancestral haunts. We were going to visit relatives at the start of July but should perhaps change this to the second half of August. I know the Dutch school holidays are staggered and tend to be earlier in the year, unlike England, where the whole country seems to be on holiday in August. We enjoyed ourselves in Scotland during August last year, as the schools there seem to have July based holidays. Makes such a difference!

Happy travelling

the school holidays, as far as I know, start mid June in the North, end June in the middle and mid July in the South. The province of Friesland is lovely with all it's lakes. This is right in the North of the Netherlands.
I am having a quick weekend in Valkenburg for the Christmas market. Leaving tomorrow and will be back Sunday evening !! We'll be in the caves at Valkenburg on Friday and take the train to Aachen on Saturday.
Yippee, I am looking forward to that and will bore everybody with : oh, I used to have that as a child, blah blah blah, etc. Very Happy
