As my house and contents insurance comes up for renewal, increasing from £25 per month to £35 per month despite a 10% no claim discount, I have begun looking around for a new insurer. The trouble is, most insurers demand that the house is not empty for greater than 30 days, obviously an issue for those of us who travel for a couple of months (or more) at a time. My current insurer, Direct Line, has a 60 day limit. Previously it wasn't a problem because my daughter lived at home, but she's now moved out.

How do other members get round this? Any suggestions for a good and cost effective home and contents insurer? Comments and advice welcomed

Andy

We changed our motorhome insurance to "Comfort Insurance" this year and also changed the house insurance to them as well. It was very competitive and allowed us to have 90 days, I think we could have had longer but have settled for 90 days at the moment.

Hi,
My house insurances are with RIAS. (must be over 50!!!). Before travel, if more than 60 days I have to inform them in writing and when I return. There are also certain conditions concerning the security of the house.

Andy,

We have the combined House/travel/medical insurance with Comfort. We have the 180 day option which allows us to be away for single trips up to the 180 days.

It's very convenient having all your insurance with one company there's no arguments about who pays for what.

I have obtained a quote from Direct Line off the web, for identical cover to that which I currently have with them. The quote was half the price of the Direct Line renewal quote.

So much for loyalty!

We have one of those 30 days away limit insurances. However, we do arrange for someone to stay in the house overnight every so often. This means the "counter is zeroed" from that night and you start again. The overnight is necessary even though we have people in every day to feed the cats etc.

As I don't trust Ins. Companies at all, I always tell our Ins. broker of the arrangements each time as a sort of back up.

Actually, isn't it nice to have these type of problems instead of working out how to get an extra week off work!

Hope you get it sorted.

Sue

I cancelled my original Direct Line Policy, and took out the new Direct Line policy, at £180 for house and contebts and accidental damage. This is half the Direct Line renewal cost. This gives 60 days absence. Direct Line was our motor insurer when our van was flooded in Bulgaria, (http://www.pippins.me.uk/2005/2005_bulgaria.htm) and gave us a very good settlement, so I am kindly disposed towards them.

Moral: Always check your renewal premium against competitors. They use customer inertia to screw you.

Thanks for all your comments.

Andy

Caravan Club:

Absences over 60 days must be advised to the insurer
Absences over 90 days require water etc turned off and weekly visits by say friend or neighbour.
