It is possible to pick up TV via the internet

If you watch a TV programme via the internet do you require to have a TV Licence because you are not receiving it via the air waves

Any legal boffins able to answer

If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one.

Interesting point PamNPete, If you have a PC with TV tuner then I guess you are receiving TV as you would in the normal fashion, and [i:c12818f1e0]should[/i:c12818f1e0] have a licence, I will stand correction on this point.
However if you are viewing TV from a web page on the internet, as mentioned you are not directly receiving a TV signal and in this case cos you dont have a tuner fitted you are not "connected" so to speak and shouldnt need a licence.
A similar situation arises with Radio Amateurs and Internet Linking, if the transmission isnt going thro a Link or Repeater then the Amateur isnt techinically on the air and doesnt need to record details in his/her log book which is a legal requirement otherwise.

There has to be someone on this site who can give an answer with the number of full timers we have with no "permanent address"

Hi Folks

Regarding a licence if you own a tv/video / dvd recorder. I remember reading someone was prosecuted for just that. However he got off cause he proved he was using his tv to watch hire films and his own camera film only.

To watch TV over the internet you'd need a pretty fast connection such as broadband.

Hi all

It looks like TV via the internet is definitely on the way, a sample of what we can expect is available now at the link below. BUT don't bother unless you have a high speed Broadband connection.

On my connection (.5Mbit) even the full screen picture is OK

As the signal is beamed from the studio to a receiving station and then transmitted to the sender who puts it on the internet the answer is yes you need a Licence.
Exactly the same as someone who is on cable tv.

If however you were fortunate enough to have a direct cable link with the studio and no signal whatsoever was transmitted it would be a different story.
