Hi

Reading the slow cooker thread has prompted me to have dumplings today. I am OK at making them and have traditionally cooked them in the casserole pot in the oven etc. I turn them over half way through cooking to make sure they are stodgy etc.

I read somewhere that you can actually bake them, on a tray etc?

How do you cook yours?

Russell

In the casserole or stew with the gravy or sauce of whatever we're going to eat them with. I'd have thought that done in the oven they were too dry.

Have you tried making scones( no sugar !) and putting them on top of your casserole about 15 -20 minutes before you eat ? Push them down so they are about half in the liquid and half out.

Another thing I like is thick slices of brown bread, spread with grainy mustard or cheese and put on the top of a meaty casserole or stew for the last 20 minutes or so.

All of above save peeling potatoes and cooking them separately.

Hi

Our favorite way to finish a "stove top" casserole or steak and kidney in the van or at home..not dumplinks but very nice :

for 2 portions

Make up some suet pastry:

put into a bowl
4oz self raising flour
2oz shredded suet
pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
mix together with a knife adding cold water 3-5 fl oz as reqd. to bring together to soft dough... do not knead or overwork.

Heat the pre prepared casserole or steak and kidney in a saucepan to a very gentle simmer on the stovetop.

Press out the suet pastry into a round that fits inside the top of the saucepan and lay onto the steak and kidney ...put the lid onto the saucepan and continue to simmer for appx 30 mins ..mmmmm Laughing

Mike

You can cook them in <3 mins in a microwave if you are in a hurry and just put them in the casserole for last 5 mins to soak up the juice

If you put cling film over the top when microwaving them - they steam as well as cook from the inside and so stay moist. you might have to vary the time based on the wattage of your microwave - 3 mins is for 850w and for 10 dumplings the size of golf balls - when you put them in

"Iceland mate - packs of dumplings for 99p no points though"

And how do you know if you're dieting?
Oh! It's because you HAVE known you are NOW dieting .....

I think caring mods should stick a health warning on this thread title.
